Question alternator wires!!!!!???????

well I just took out my alternator and reinstalled the new one I just bought. I started my car and after the idle started to go down (around 1300RPM) the car started to bobble and eventually stalled out. I took the alternator back out and I saw the two wires that went into the housing of the alternator were stripped and stuck together in more than one spot. they looked all dried out and cracked and the wires were showing, so I taped them up and checked all around for any more but didnt see any(took all the old tape and insulation off then retaped the whole lenth of wire from the front of the engine wire harness.) I put the alternator back in and now my car wont start. Help; please?????? It sounds like it will almost turn over but then it just spins and spins. then it will sound like it will start again but doesnt. I already ran the unflooding procedure because it smelt like gas but to no prevail. any help would be grateful. 87 GXL catless in NJ W/headers

I use to live in NJ and then went into the air force and now I'm here in Oregon. did most of my growing up in Alantic City then moved to Somers Point, that was way back when the beach was free and that Trump guy wasn't sprem yet. But any how sound like you have a lot going on with your car more then one item to think. And it's going to be realy hard for any one to help you over the net. So you need to get details, lots of info, and I'm thinking when you get more then any one wents to hear you will have figgered out your problem.

Check the fuses inside the car. It's on the third row FROM THE BOTTOM, second fuse from the left. 15amp fuse. Check the ones to its left and right while there.

That would be my answer IF you had not said it seems to want to start. Not wanting to start but making the wanna start sound....makes it seem flooded.

Do your idiot lights come on when the key is just to ON???

One of the small wires is 12v from the fuse described above. The other wire is a ground signal to a relay in the CPU, that when the ground is on the wire, will pull the relay in the CPU in, and make the idiot lights come on. Just FYI stuff. Keep both those wires seperated, please.

hopefully you didn't fry the diode block in the new alternator when the wiring shorted...were you reading good voltage (14.4 or so) with the new one when it was running?

sorry so long to respond had to go to work. All the fuses are fine and the alternator is not blown I brought it to the generator place to check it and they said it was fine. . Like I said all the wires are retaped and not short circuting. all the idiot lights come on when the key is on.(this used to be a problem with my car untill I jiggled the wires that go int the cpu(not the ecu under the kick panel) the one near the fuse box. I found the loose wire and soldered it tight never had a problem since. But any way could I have fried my ecu?????? thats what I was thinking. I tried the 5 step unflooding 3 times and it still didnt start but it got better towards the end(got late really loud staight out exhaust w/headers). but could it be that the ecu fried when those wires touched????? thanks for the responces 1
