alternator squeeling(shriek) at 4000 rpms

i searched and searched for like 2 day now and i can't find anything in the 2nd gen forum about this.

the problem is that when i start to get up to about 4000 rpms or about 4500 tops my car makes the ungodly squeeling noise. so i was like whatever it will go away. so i checked it out and it seemed to come from the alternator. well i took the belt off and i just turned the alt and i heard a kind of squeek and grind. so i was i put some wd40 and **** like that in it and then it work for like 5 min. does it mean that my alt bearings are going out or do i just need another alt.

i saw in the third gen forum and they were saying that the belt was too tight or too loose but i have checked it and it is at the correct setting. thanks all.

hmm that's odd.. usually the squeeling will be the belt slipping which just means you have to raise the alt up to make the belt tighter around it, but since you said you took the belt off and it still squeeks then that shouldnt be the problem... before you go ahead and replace it go to somewhere like schucks or autozone and get them to test it for free, they'll do a load test and have you rev it up and see if its working properly

Turning it by hand with the belt off told the tale.
A low hiss sound would be normal.

The slip rings or maybe the bearings are worn out.

Time for a rebuilt alternator.

i will do that. i have tried to just make it as tight as possible with as little deflection but that didn't do anything for me. but i will go get it tested. i know that the alt isn't bad cause i ussually get a reading of i think 14.5v i will check it out when i go back to work though.
thanks dDuB

The only thing I can think of is the belt slipping. But... you went over that.

Speaking of alternators, I had one once that put out about 1.5x as much juice as it was supposed to. Didn't cause too many prolems for a while (more than any Ford would which have crappy electric) then it started to start blowing fuses. I went and got it check, sure enough, stupid problem. And YES, it was the right alternator for the car.

Thought I'd share that for some reason.

Btw, this was before I knew much about cars. So don't be shocked that it took me that long to figure out the problem

it should be around 12.5v and then when you start to drive it should go up to 14.5v. atleast that is what it is in my car but mine is a 88.

I get 14V at idle. I think the S5 alt puts out about 85 amps.

If your amp is blown.. don't get it rebuilt, now's a good time to go ahea and get an FD alternator and do the install. Definately worth the upgrade.

PM silverrotor about his kits. Have heard nothing but good things about them. FD alternators put out something like 110+ - 125.
