Alternator- serious issues

Alright, here's my story. Yesterday, my alternator decided to stop producing enough power to recharge the battery and I had to get a jump to start it to get home from my christmas festivities. Anyway, long story short, I replaced it today with an Autozone rebuilt unit and when I jumped it to start it again, the car freaked out like I was trying to kill it. The voltimeter spiked to the top (~17v), the lights were extremely bright, the rear wiper (that never worked) started wiping in the OFF position, it was running very rough... all sorts of stuff that seem to indicate a bad voltage regulator or some overpower condition. Does anyone know what is going on here?

I have tryed the same thing, it was the stator in the alt. that fryed, i replaced the alt and my worn out battery, now everything is allright.
If you are gonna buy another altenator, go for the FD altenator-swap, just remember to buy a 100 amp. mainfuse too.---Kim

Thanks for the replys, I did take the alt. back to Autozone and they tested it. They confirmed my suspicions, it was baked. Then they sent me down to Fredericksburg, 17 miles south, to pick up a different one because I wanted it urgently. When I got there, I had the insight to have them test it before I left. It generated ABSOLUTELY NO CURRENT! Needless to say, I don't have much faith in Autozone anymore, even though this new alt. has a lifetime warrenty. Now, I have to drive back down to Fredericksburg tomorrow morning at 10am to pick up what will hopefully be a working alternator. geez, the things I go through to call myself an RX-7 driver!
