Hi guys, my 89 vert has a loud squeal from alternator at around 6krpm.
I’ve fought this problem off and on since I’ve had it (6 years).
Stock car, I’ve tried numerous belts, cleaning pulleys, tightened belt to about 1/4 deflection.
Had alternator checked at a shop, said it was fine, bearings too.
Im thinking of trying an FD alt, search gives me various info on installing that.
I have a stereo amp, maybe upgrade is smart anyway.
Opinions?

 

You sure it's the alternator? I used to have an annoying squeal on my S5 always consistently occurring at 3k rpm and above. Always thought it was the alternator. Replaced several belts, but it still persisted. Turned out it was a combination of factors contributing to the squeal. It was both my PS idler pulley and fan clutch combined.

 

I think it’s the alternator because I can rev it while watching the belt, at around 5k the squeal starts and the belt at alternator pulley looks ‘bowed’
