alternator belt snapping

so my alternator belt keeps snapping. The third one just snapped. Brand new belt, i installed it loosly and it stretches so it couldnt have been too tight. The alternator spins freely theres no resistance from that. And it looks like the belt is just under too much stress, no scratches or anything from it. Also before this last belt snapped i could smell the belt burning ... not sure what the problem is here. Nothing rubbing up against it as far as i can tell. Any ideas please let me know, thanks.

check the spacer for the alternator.should be behind the bracket not infront.that's if it's a S4.

do you have the right series alternator?there is also a spacer on the crank pulley.if the motor has been pulled apart before that might be your problem.check the online fsm w/ blow-ups and it'll show you how it goes back together.

Had this same problem before, use a washing machine belt instead. You can get them at AutoZone

Use a ruler to check the alignment to see if it's straight. Make sure the lower bolt is tightened properly.

Perhaps the bearing is catching on something?

well i think i fixed the problem. It seemed like the water pulley was maybe a quarter inch or so misaligned with the eccenctric shaft pulley. I pulled them both off since u have get the eccenctric shaft pulley off to get the water pump pulley off and i placed a washer on each of the 4 studs that the fan connect to, on the water pump. It moved the pulley out hopefully just enough to line up better with the eccentric shaft. Drove it a few miles today with no bruning smell and no snapped belt. Think that fixed it.
