alternator???

I was driving my 7 from Texas to Maine, about halfway in Virginia, she started hesitating on the highway I was giving her full gas but she wouldn't go over 4k rpm. i pulled into a gas station to try and figure it out. while in park she still wouldn't go very high in rpm's and when she did she backfired and dropped back to low rpm's. i decided to try and get her to a parts store, thought it was my fuel pump.. but as i was leaving the station she still didnt want to pick up speed or rpm's and then just flat out died. wouldn't restart or even try to crank. when the tow truck arrived i could hear a relay clicking on and off. i'm think, hoping, that its the alternator.. one more thing that makes me think alt is I was trying to use a DC to AC invertor that was plugged into the cig. socket but it wouldn't power my laptop the light indicator on the invertor was showing less than 9.5 volts if anyone has any idea please let me know thanx

Charge your battery and take it to a parts store and see if they will test your alt and your battery. I know AutoZone will do it for free.

If you were under 12.6 volts the car can stop running.

some thoughts

yeah, but would it make it feel as if the fuel pump gave out? also while i had it parked and still running while i was giving it all the gas i could, she was smoking and back firing.. i can understand the fuel pump not getting enough juice to operate properly, but why the smoke?.. could she have been burning close to straight oil? also i just moved to Maine, who is the best rotary specialist in New England?
