alternator?

Hi All,
I was wondering if there is anyway you can tell if your alternator is dead? ive tried to search but it timed out so sorry if this has been covered.
My Problem,
The car is starting to have a bit of trouble kicking over i turn the key starter motor is kicking but i have to get a bit of gas to kick the engine over? im thinking its either a faulty battery or alternator.

All help apprecitaed.

Cheers

got a multimeter? obviously don't have the voltage gage in the car....put the meter leads on the battery posts while car is running (observe correct polarity), should get 13.5 to 14.5 or so, depending on temp...if you get 12.5 or lower, the alt's shot...I gotta say, though, it doesn't sound like it's the alt giving you the problems...

how does your turbo timer show you you its in the 13.5-14.5 range? it should ge giving you a set number not in between 13.5-14.5 jumping back and forth 1 whole volt...
