Alternative Spark Plugs

Has anyone had any success using an alternative spark plug in their 13B (i.e. the usual side electrode automotive plug)?

I've got to get a new set of plugs tomorrow and am hoping there is a more easily accessible alternative.

Thanks.

BTW I checked the FAQs first and found nothing.

your best bet is the NGK platinums #'s 4764 leading and 5255 trailing

pretty easy to order from advanced auto parts

^ Why platinums?

Turns out the Mazda dealer doesn't sell the spark plugs for RX-7s anymore...

Your dealer doesn't sell them or doesn't stock them? Go to Crappy (Canadian Tire) and they'll order ones within a couple of days - tell them to get them from the depot. Or try Westowne Mazda on Dundas just East of 427 on the south side. NGK number BUR7EQ and BUR9EQ (two of each) IIRC, add a "P" to the end for platinum. The above poster's numbers may be stock numbers of some sort. My buddy just bought spark plugs from the Mazda dealer mentioned...speak to Al or Richard (used to own a TII)...tell them Paulo (Dan's buddy) sent you.

The guy at the parts counter (Erin Mills Mazda) couldn't find them. He said the set of 4 has been discontinued and there are no replacements listed.

I'm going to call Partsource tomorrow and hopefully they can have the plugs tomorrow night (I hope). Maybe I can convince them to stock a few sets.

your parts guy is wrong. they are still available from the dealer.. however, the oem plugs are about three times as much as a local retailer. i.e. napa, advance auto etc. i wouldnt use any plug other than NGK. hands down the best plug available for the RX-7.

BUR7EQ's are your leading plugs and BUR9EQ's are your trailing. the trailing plugs are unique in that they are easialy recognizable by the two blue rings on the ceramic section. an old mazda tech told me many years back that mazda did that because the trailing plugs are towards the top, the sky is up, the sky is blue, blue rings blue sky, easier to remember..i dont know if there is any validity in that but i guess it makes sense.

..just to reitterate.the part numbers
NGK bur7eq (leading)
NGK bur9eq(trailing)
add a P to the Parts number is you are getting Platinums.(like bur7eqp)
Partsource more than Likely Will not have them in Stock. They will have to order them in.
hell,Canadian Tire can get them Too.
I actually got a couple Sets off of EBAY,they come up once in awhile..
I paid close to 90 bucks Canadian Once, for Platinums (taxes etc) ,But Ebay was about 30 bucks USD Shipped.
I have ran platinums in my car for 3 years,,great plug,a little more expensive but I think Price reflects Performance.

I don't mean to thread jack, but i also have a question on Spark plugs. I have a mild mod car, BNR stage 2, apexi pfc, 550cc/1200cc, boost controller, fmic..... I hear that people are running BUR9EQ's on all four and its fine, but isn't that only if its for mostly racing and not for daily driver and spirited driving? and i hear that its harder to start and idle. should i just stick with stock??

when I got my motor rebuilt my mech told me to use 90's nissan sentra plugs (no idea what the # is) because they are much harder to foul (and cheaper) than the rotary plugs. Car drove fine while I was breaking in the motor, so they'll do in a pinch.
I got the right plugs once the motor got up to proper compression.

When you switch to 10 heat range plugs you can start affecting idle quality. the running four 9's isn't bad. I run them on my T04R setup. On most street setups the aftermarket plugs are just more bullshit (special plug socket needed, poor idle, short life) with dubious benefit.

since it is a nonturbo, just run 7's in the leading and 9's in the trailing
