Alternative to replacing the TOP?
I am new here and I have a question. I am doing my friend a favor. He is moving out of his house and into an apartment, so he doesn't have room for his project RX-7. It is a convertible. I used to have a Gen 1 Rx right after high-school and it was my favorite of all the cars I have owned. I was forced to sell it, and have always wanted another one. This vert has the transmission, rear end, and suspension of a Turbo II car. I think the brakes are TII also. It only needs the top replaced and the car inspected to be on the road.
I searched here and it looks like the top replacement isn't going to happen for a while. I haven't seen the top yet (I have only seen the car once and the top was down right after he bought it. If it isn't too bad, I'll try to patch it as described in the various threads. If it is too far gone, is there any other option to replacing the fabric? Is there a removable hard top, or anything else to use instaed of the convertible top. Or is "warm weather driving only", my only answer?
Thanks
Turnz

Welcome to the board.
There is no hard top for the vert. A couple of people have attempted hard top conversions with mixed results. The top is close enough to hardtop already with the hard targa section.
Replacing the top isn't that bad. It takes some time and patience. A dry place to work where the car can be left apart is pretty helpful. Look in the archive, there is a thread there that will help.
Regarding the warm weather only motoring: if you are babying a top that is marginal, do not raise or lower it in cold weather, (below 40*) The fabric gets stiff and if it is already brittle, you could finish it off.
I drive my vert top down year round. (yes, this is Dallas TX) This last week alone I have driven it at below 30* temps several times. With the windblocker up and the side windows just over ear level the car stays pretty comfortable. The key is to put the top up and down in the warmth of a garage so the top won't tear.
Good luck with the Vert!
