check the voltage ouput from the alt.

if not above 14.4V at idle with no acc on, then alt is very questionable.

There are many other tests to see how it performs under load, e.g.:

turn on the lights
check voltage at idle (should a tad lower than 14.4V - maybe 13.5V)
rev engine to 3,000 rpm, voltage should go back up to 14.4

etc etc

you could also bring it to where Jesse James gets its parts (autozone) and hopefully one counter person will know how to use the testing machine (don't go at lunch time).
