Alt belt wont stop squeeling
Alt belt wont stop squeeling
My alternator belt wont stop squeeling and I've gone through two belts in a month because they have broken. I have the belt tightened to the specified ammount and its still squeeling. I have all of my emissions stuff removed including the airpump, and I have exhaust and a street port. Will a dual alt pulley and two new belts solve my problem?
Thanks

The dual alternator belt should help with the slipping. You said you tightened to the specified amount, which would be? I always tighten my alternators as much as I can. Pry it up with a crowbar or something and bolt that sucker in.
For all I know that's bad, but it's worked so far.

Hey, do yourself a favor and take the belt off, then turn the alt by hand. Feel any resistance? Any play? Are you sure it's not your alt bearing that's squealing? How old is the alt? Going through two belts in a short period of time like that means that: A) You're overloading the alt electrically, or B) the alt is screwed internally, and it's only a matter of time before it ***** on you...
Wow, never thought of that Wayne. I had an alternator once that was putting out about 1.5 the electricity it was supposed to. Kept messing up my systems.
Btw, stop being useful Wayne, you make me look bad

Coincidentaly, when I had the stock clutch fan hooked up, I couldn't rev above 6k without the *waterpump* pulley squeeling. Plus my powerband was gone at 7k.. I removed it and put the efan back in, and the squeel was gone, and my powerband goes well past 8k (even if its not super safe...)
Anyhow, the clutch fan was locking up causing the waterpump pulley to say **** the belts.

When my Air Pump belt broke, it caused my water pump pully and my alternator pulley to squeel. If your alt. isn't screwed up as Wayne mentioned, then I would reccomend doing the dual belt pully.
If the alt is ok.... its more than likely squeeking from the waterpump... since your airpump belt is off.... its only getting half the belt contact it should be. Then again... I'm not right there listening to the belt. If you're leaving the airpump off, get a dual alt pulley.

i tried that 3L220 belt and its just really loose and doesnt help at all. It worked for about a day and then stretched out some I guess because it doesn't work at all anymore.

Too tight will bend the shaft of the alt... pretty much killing it fast unless the belt breaks.
Of course if you are a weakling, then your "tightest that you can" may only be the stock tightness...
My car would run hot and squeel until I got a Dual Alt pulley on my car.
I put a Yoohoo on it and it got rid of the squeeling but I had cooling issues since the water pump was slipping a bit still.

the cheapest ones are at www.mazdatrix.com but you can get bright colored rotor shaped ones for a little bit more from http://rx7cz.net/shop/
