alrighty, well i have a problem

well to start off, its an 1988 N/A (SE). it has about 125k miles on it runs alright but its not in the best condition but its not that bad. got it in early june.

so im pretty positive i have power steering because of this...( i wasnt really sure before)

i was driving at about 30 in second and slightly drifted a left hand turn and abnout at the apex of the turn my engine got loud, real loud. i looked down at the rpm gauge and the needle was nearing 8k. ok. stupid, yes i know, i've already thought about where i messed up. many times. ok i thought, shift up to third as i exit the turn. ok nothing seemed wrong at the time(now i start driving normally) , but as i started manuvering around the parked cars in the street i realized my steering was a little... wrong? keep on driving and i think, damn this is really, really hard to turn. ok now im really getting upset with myself because i dont know what the hell just happend. i get of my car at a stop sign to look at the camber of my wheels or whatever to see if something like that was altered. nope, everything appeared fine. so i got back in the car and thought, could having my car running at 8k rpm really have anything to do with the steering. well i wouldnt think so. so im thinking because drifting puts a lot of pressure on your steering and other components, that something down there broke or something and thats why its so hard to turn. but if that were the case, wouldnt my car not be able to turn or let alone drive at all? i dont know. so on the way home from where i was at, i found it was harder but not too hard to turn to the left, but it was extremely hard to turn to the right. it felt as if i was the only power turning the wheels or something, im not really sure how to explain but it was really weird. and it probably wasnt the best idea to drive home. this is my first car so i could use all the advice as to what the problem could be and hot to fix it. tomorrow, i will jack it up and pull out my haynes book and just look for what the problem could be. but i could sure use everyones advice.

so is this the power steering or is it something else and how do i fix it?

thanks,
jordan

Maybe with the high RPM's you chucked off the PS belt? Sound like with the miles on your car, and the way you drive it your engine is going to die soon. Then you Power Steering will be the least of your problems.

now this may sound dumb... but did your powersteering belt snap or fall off?

*edit* beat me to it.

and from what you say, like that you weren't sure if your car had powersteering or not, it sounds like you have never even opened up the hood on your car before.

88rx7grxl - yea the way i drive my car is really a lot better than the way it was driven before lat me tell you. i never meant to run the rpms up that high, i made a mistake and unfortunately something bad has happened.

SWT- im not really sure and at this point that doesnt sound dumb. i got to check that out tomorrow

yep, popped the hood today, and i found there was no PS belt whatsoever. so im guessing my engine cranking at 8k rpm had something to do with the belt, maybe like shredding it or something.
