almost done with cold air box

Just like the threads says. I am almost done with the cold air box (templates courtesy of attomica Thanks!)

I finished welding it last night with a $40 torch and some steel solder. Took a while since I have never welded before and it came out pretty sloppy in some areas. Tonight I need to file down the excess solder and go buy the K&N filter and also a breather filter. Hopefully kragen will have them in stock.

I need some opinions though. What color should I paint the box? It is made out of galvanized roof flashing so its not the prettiest thing in the world. I need some recommendations on point color, type, and brand. I want the polished look but dont think I can achieve that with high temp paint.

I will follow up with pictures and comments after it is totally completed. I have messed up a few times and could possibly give some people some pointers on how to go about certain aspects of making the box.

High-Temp Aluminum Paint from Walmart. Looks like chrome. So much so, after painting my rotor housings with it, I stripped it BACK off...

...I hate bling...

Do you happen to have a picture of what it looked like with the aluminum paint?

Any other suggestions? I was either thinking black or red to match my car but I really like gun metal. Not sure how it would look.

No picture, and my momma took my digital camera on vacation with her.

BTW even though I hate crome, I used most of the leftover paint on my step-fathers tractor wheels

does high temp paint act as a shield against heat? The main reason I want to paint it is to get the box from getting superheated

high temp paint is just meant to be in areas that are normally hot, it wont melt or anything. i say paint it with duplicolor gunmetal wheel paint. looks very nice

you can buy quality ceramic paint from companies such as www.griotsgarage.com For those that don't know, all pettit does for their so called "ceramic coating" is spray paint it with ceramic paint, and let it cure under a heat lamp.

So last night I didnt get a chance to go out and get the parts I needed but did finish filing down the majority of excess weld so that it looks decent.

Still need some opinions on what color high temp paint or ceramic coated paint and what brand.

Do they sell ceramic coated paint in general automotive stores?

I also borrowed my sisters digicam so I'll take some pix tonight of what it looks like so far being unpainted.

Just get some dolpi-color ( I think that's the brand), it has the color on the cap and it says "Engine Enamel" and it's supposed to withstand 500F temps.

A guy I know uses that to paint his rebuilt rotor housings, good stuff, check it out.

First.... Its hard to get paint to stick to Galvanized Metal...

So my suggestion is to use a Self Etching Primer before you paint it.

If I were you, I'd either paint it black, or paint it to match your silicone vaccume lines (or the color of silcone vaccume lines you Will have!!)

Ohhh... I did a red GXL with standard Yellow Vaccume lines from Mazdatrix.. not flourecent, just yellow, and that looked great...

Yellow or red are great with a black car and blue is best for a white car.... never done a blue car, so i dunno bout that but i would imagine orage would be pretty cool, works on my buddys tl100r!!

Can I just leave the primer to air dry instead of baking it in the oven?

My cold air box is welded with silver solder and if i put it in the oven it will melt and fall apart.

it's not close enough to any heat source that it will burn off. you could use regular krylon and be fine.
