to all who have vacuum leaks. (long)

a member here had a question PMing me about his idle. the car would start up fine, and idle for 20 seconds, then just die. (i'm assuming after cold start was finished doing its thing) anyone who has anything to add, please feel free.

well, about the car not running, i know how you feel about that does your car run fine for those 20 seconds during the cold start cycle? (actually its supposed to be 17 seconds, but close enough) if i were you i'd take the upper intake off, look around under the secondary fuel rail (i'm assuming that you've done work on it before and know where this stuff is) and there is a little brass or yellow plastic thing that is screwed into your lower intake manifold. this little device is for the cold start system and it has three pressure/vacuum nipples on it (not sure if its pressure or vacuum) and plug all of those nipples if they are unplugged (this is where my vacuum leaks were, all three nipples were open and sucking/blowing air)
If that doesnt solve your problem, there could be a few more possible solutions.
Get a can of starting fluid or carburator cleaner (any cheap brand will work) and start your car. while your car is going through its cold start cycle, spray around the engine bay with that starting fluid. this is really a good tactic to finding vacuum leaks, (if a vacuum leak is your problem.) There are some specific areas under the engine bay that you may want to think about spraying while trying to find this vacuum leak. spray around the charcoal canister, (probably wont yield any results, but why the hell not try?) under the upper intake (along the secndary fuel rail, that little brass/yellow cold start device i was talking about is right there behind the secondary fuel rail.) Probably the place where you are going to get a result from is right behind the upper intake manifold. there is a set of four, yes count em, intake/pressure nipples right behind the upper intake (there are those 4 big arches that the upper intake consists of, right at the end of those where it flattens, kinda by the throttle bodies.) this is always a big spot that people overlook because it has alot of potential to cause a vacuum leak. there is also another set of 3 nipples just opposite those four on the back, hence these are on the front. check those (i think mine were fabric hoses or something?)
Honestly, i REALLY think that a vacuum leak is your problem my man which obviously isnt hard to fix (if you can find the sonofabitch)
the last tactic, HAILERS gave me the idea. there is a rack of 4 or 5 solenoids (probably 5 since you have a T2 and the twin scroll) right under where you fill up your oil. follow that oil fill pipe down and you should see them, they should be different colors since they control different things. all these things do it create vacuum or pressure to turn on/off the components of emissions (ACV, EGR, etc...) NOW, the idea is to get a nice big cigar about the size of your dick, take off each vacuum hose one by one, take a huge puff off the cigar keeping the smoke in your mouth, then blow all that smoke into the vacuum hose (do this for each little vacuum hose on the solenoid rack) I GUARANTEE that IF you have a vacuum leak, this will find it.
You probably jsut have a hose that is disconnected or something since the car idles at 3k (during the cold start) try holding the throttle up right before the cold start ends to see if you can keep it going after the cold start thing stops. if you can keep it going, then the problem probably lies within a vacuum leak.
what i would do if i were you is take off the entire upper intake (maybe a little complicated, but not too hard) which just means you have to take off the throttle cables, a cooland line on the under side of the throttle bodies (that is kind of a bitch to get off) and those 5 bolts that bolt the upper intake to the lower intake now you can see the whole damn rats nest thing and fuel lines and yadda yadda. BEFORE you do any of this, try that carburator cleaner or starting fluid trick while the car is running, you may have a small vacuum problem with like one hose disconnected, if that fixes the problem then you dont need to take te whole intake off
Well , i hope i've been of help to you. i've been looking at this idle **** on these cars since i bought mine 2 months ago and FINALLY got it figured out. good luck.

spazzy: can you keep it going with the throttle? or does no ammount of throttle help?
