For all you non believers who said this would sound like crap. It RULES. I love the way it hits the highs nice and quick and pics up lows very well also. Havent had a chance to really test it out with a bass CD yet cuz my car is currently not running but from what i played it sounded great.

You think more neon green lights are necessary?

very clean install nonetheless.

Hehe... I do not care what anyone else says. I am starting to really like the other-worldly-alienish-neon light setup.

do the louder sounds shake or rattle the topper of the storage unit? Do you have to open the bin everytime you listen to music or do you leave the lid down? If you do leave the lid down does it lessen the higher pitch sounds? BTW it looks great. I'm thinking about putting one speaker in each of my storage bins. And putting the amp behind the seat, if i have room. When you drilled or cut holes for all the wires, where did you do it at?

The install looks great. I would just think that the sub causes the storage bin to rattle like one mean SOB!!!

I actualy havent listened to it with the lid on but i'm thinking about cutting out the center plastic part and putting a mesh on it so that the sound can travel through the carpet thus lessening the vibrations. If its still bad i'll just leave the lid open.

Drilling the holes for the amp wires was easy. Just put most of the wires facing back so that you cant see them and just ran them through the plastic.

I got the wires to the sub by making two small holes then used binding post terminals through the fiberglass. pretty simple... i'll try and get pics of it.

very nice I've been considering this type of install with my subs currently they take up the whole back in a bandpass box and sound great but theres no storage, I don't have the bins just the fiberglass peice that goes there under the carpet. and are those switches on the front of the bin area? what are they for?

Looks good, but it also looks like its going to rattle pretty good. Neon lights still look tacky.

What's the enclosure volume, and is it what is recommended for the speaker?
Is the enclosure ported?
Is the enclosure reinforced in any way?
How are you going to stop the amp from overheating?

LOL, for all of you noobs, aftermarket sub boxes for the cargo bins were available since the 80's. However, I guess they are probably out of production now, and therefore this may seem like a new idea. I'm not sure if putting the amp there is a great idea, though.

What's the enclosure volume, and is it what is recommended for the speaker? Not sure on the enclosure volume as its hard to calculate because the bin is tapered but somone once said around .65 cu. ft. It looks like to me more like .5. The speaker sealed recomended volume is .5
Is the enclosure ported? No
Is the enclosure reinforced in any way? Lots and Lots of fiberglass with Nylon rope as sort of a ribbing inside it to help keep rigidness.
How are you going to stop the amp from overheating? 12volt fan... just havent gotten around to that yet.

Well it seems that the amp would overheat when placed in a storage bin like that. My amp is bolted in front of the driver side storage bin, behind the seat.

Well it sound alright, it could sound better. This is inarguable fact, and unless you build two systems to compare with, you will always be in the dark.
Enjoy your nescience.

I don't think anyone said it "couldn't be done", they (and I) have continually said, that the location is poor for proper sound.

The same speaker (and amp) in a proper location and a proper enclosure would sound like twice or three times the same power and sound output.

Toss in the acoustics of the bin location, and you have a serious handicap to what the system could sound like.

So, again it's not that anyone said it couldn't be done, they said it would not sound as good as it should in the bin location.

However I am glad you like it, but I would ber very concerned with the amp over heating as mounted as you have done.

My guess is that the switches are to control the tacky Neon Lights in the bins. And perhaps the neons under the car

I know noone said it couldnt be done. Must most people are non beleivers that it sounds good.

And yes the same settup with a box in the hatch does sound Louder... but i'm not going for loud... i'm going for Clean bass and thats exactly what i got.

As for the switches... two arent used yet... one is for the FTP's to light up... the other is for underbodies

I must've misunderstood your thread title then.

There's more to a successful sub install than volume. The most important part of any speaker install is the frequency response you get from it. By aiming the sub straight up at the flat roof the sound waves are reflected straight back down at the speaker, resulting in the sound waves simply cancelling each other out at certain frequencies while at other frequencies the sound waves reinforce each, increasing their volume. Instead of a nice smooth flat frequency response you get a curve with dips and peaks, or just one big peak. So it's loud at one particular frequency and lame at others. All you get is one-note boom-boom. That's not good sound.

If you're happy with it then fine. But don't go around telling people it's a good place to put a speaker, or that it'll sound great. Chances are it won't.

does the same principle apply with the generally acceptable vert sub location under the rear hatch? its pretty much the same location and all i have seen have the sub pointing straight up..
is this the same?
