There are actually 3 or 4 variances in both NA and turbo 2nd gen rear irons.
The series 4 started off with a small casting by the upper dowel, and a small diameter hole for the temp sensor probe. In mid 88 they seem to have switched to a larger hole for the temp sensor probe, and a larger probe. I have even seen a few late 88's with the reinforcement by the upper dowel.
Series 5, was sort of pot luck. All of them had the larger hole for temp sensor. Some of them had the same casting at the upper dowel as s4. A few of them had a small reinforcement between there and the oil filter pedestal. An even fewer of them had a large casting around the upper dowel (same size as FD) plus the reinforcement.
No, this is not just a jspec/aspec difference, as the jspecs I've seen were half and half too.
The good news is that apparently all the remans have been coming with the biggest, strongest, latest casting/reinforcement.
This pattern applies both to NA and turbo irons, though there is the obvious port configuration difference between them.
