for all 3" and above exhaust owners
I would like to know , how bad it is to stick in a silencer that produces back pressure into your exhaust or are u just living with the loudness of the rotary...

Just repeat the line: "I am not gonna fall for no banana in the tail pipe", because the silencer is just about that.
my exhaust is 3 1/8 and just fine without any silencer. With a silencer, its just like having a 1 1/2 inch exhaust.

you can't get a 3 1/8" inch straight through silencer? it has no baffles so how could it be a banana in your tailpipe? how about a good read: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler.htm

I'm not going to get into the stupid banana argument, but I'm almost certain the original poster is talking about the 'but plug' type silencers that you stick into your exhaust tips.
My friend has one. The hole in the silencer is 1.5" max, from what I remember. It certainly makes the car very quiet which he wants on the highway, so he can listen to his stereo. But he doesn't boost with it in.
My exhaust is 3" straight-through with the GReddy Power Extreme catback. I just deal with the noise. Who needs to listen to the radio when you can hear your turbo spooling

Rotors still spinning

It is very easy to muffle a rotary exhaust system effectively and still not suffer any noticable power loss. Those inserts that most ricers use basically mean that while you have it installed, you are making less power than stock and then when you want to go faster you need to physically get out of the car to remove it. Those things are the single worst product to ever hit the market.

racing beat presilencers are nice. although ive only seen them on my friend's FB. and hes only got a 2 and 1/4" exhaust. but its nice and quiet if you're driving normal, but when you open it up it has a real nice, loud, rotary sound. i love it.

My post about the Banana was refering to the silencer/baffle that people install to lower noise levels, and that it robs so much HP that the car feels dead.
See as a kids prank back in the old days, if you wanted to make someones car not work, you would shove a bananna or a potato up the exhaust pipe. This would kill the car from starting. The Bananna in the tail pipe line I mentioned was from a old Edddie Murphy movie (are you old enough to know who Eddie Murphy is??? Black comedian, used a lot of profanity in his act, was later on Saturday Night live, now makes kiddie movies for Disney) anyway the old Eddie Murphy movie was Beverly Hills Cop, and to stop some cops from following him, he jammed a bananna up the cop cars tail pipe. This plugged up the pipe and prevented the cops from following him.

Exhaust noise
I have a 3" -> big resonator -> 2.5" Y-pipe -> 2 3-pass mufflers and my Series 4 isn't much louder than stock at idle.
Luckily we have no emissions issues over here in NZ, so i just had a local exhaust shop custom fab me an exhaust from the turbo back - since i was lowering the vehicle i told them to keep it as close as possible to the underside of the vehicle, and they did a really nice job on it.
They wanted to give me a single-pipe system but i insisted on duals - which i think tends to make it much quieter at low RPM, as you get twice the muffling, and half the flow through each muffler.
Of course, the drone on acceleration and deceleration around town is pretty loud, And if you decide to floor it it's f*ckin loud - like 'holy **** what car is making that unholy noise?' loud.
It sounds really good though, deep and low and no hint of the buzzsaw noise that you'd get from a single 3" straight-pipe -> race muffler. If i had a bridgeport with a 'brap-brap-brap' idle i'd be more inclined just to go with minimal muffling but would certainly be in a very grey area w/regard to legality.
My car probably is 'too loud' now - it's louder than it needs to be for the power i'm making, but since my old exhaust was all dented and crappy i figured it i was going to replace it I might as well go the whole hog.
If you spend a lot of time drivng the car, I would really think twice before fitting an unrestricted exhaust, as it will be very loud, and the 'unmodified' exhaust note of a rotary is not the easiest sound on the ears - especially the drone under light acceleration from 2000-5000 or 'completely off the gas' deceleration from 5000-2000 rpm will tend to grate on your nerves sometimes. Round a racetrack is one thing - commuting to work and back is another.
Still, you can't fault the obvious power gains you get from this type of exhaust system, and i look at it as a traffic safety bonus, since theres no way in hell that anybody isn't going to hear you coming.

Silencer is good when you get a fix-it ticket. You're a tool if you think it's worthwhile on a 3" exhaust to keep the noise down. Put the stock exhaust on, it flows better than the silencer.

How throaty does you guys 3" exhaust sound? Is it like really deep, and have any of you actually had both 3" mandrel bent, and 3" crushbent exhaust before? I'd love to see if the mandrel actually makes a noticible difference in performance.

3" turbo back, from a TO4B with a P-Trim .96A/R Borla XR1 race muffler where the cat is, and a Apex'i N1. Little resonance at 76MPH, but other than that it sounds great. Around my neighborhood i just keep the revs low. I like it.
