Airbox Pics #1!!!

Here is the first round of airbox pics. I decided to take my old aluminum box and fiberglass it. Here is the dried up fiberglass waiting to be sanded and painted. I also am going to show the air filter to show how well the air inlet tube is deffinitely pushing some air. See how there is one really dirty spot on the filter? That is where the tube was pointed at. This whole project cost me about $75. Most of the money went to the fiberglass. I also threw in the old pic of the box and the lil plastic scoop that is used to catch the air.

Hey Samps how did you mount the box to the car? ALso do you have templates or one that you would want to sell? I would like to get one from you i think your desing and implementation is great. And aluminum looks great! Let me know PM me or email me at cknight1@satx.rr.com.

The box is only mounted to the car by the air filter and tube. If your MAS is mounted securely it will hold the air filter in place which in turn holds the box in place. The box is probably going to weigh in at maybe 3-5 pounds which is a lil heavier than the plain aluminum but not as cool. I do not have a useable template due to the added customizing done after the template was used. I think there are enough pics right up there for anyone to just figure it out on thier own. I really do not have the time to build these or send out templates. I'm showing what needs to be done to produce a decent airbox at a reasonable amount of money. The best part about it is that you made it yourself. Just get a couple pieces of cardboard and start cutting away. I removed the air filter and went from there. The back piece with the hole in it is the most important, it needs to meet up with the contours of the fender wall and mold around some wiring. Since I have the fresh air tube added, I needed to make an extra hole to let the tube in at the bottom. You may need to adjust some stuff right behind the headlight, but not much. THIS IS EASY PEOPLE!!!

- 1 piece of aluminum ($7)
- 2 containers of fiberglass resin ($40)
- 2 packages of fiberglass mat ($10)
- 1 plastic air scoop ($3)
- 1 three foot long plastic tube ($5)

looks great samps, i can't see anywhere to route a tube on my car but mine's an 87. is there any way you could get a pic from underneath so we could see the routing of that tube? and are you changing the aluminum to fiberglass or is that just a mold?

I went to doctors office the other day and since he took so long i started to take things out of the room. I took a ton of the fiberglass packs used to make casts. U think it would work?

Samps, the white spots on the fiberglass is where there wasnt enough resin to wet out the cloth. I suggest you cover it with another layer of JUST resin, and let it dry. And for a nice, relatively easy finish, buy some bondo, and mix the bondo and resin 50/50, then add both of the hardeners. Mix thoroughly, it should be pretty thick, but flow some. put that onto the box, and let it dry. It wont take much sanding, and will be a very durable finish.

Thanks for the tip mazdaspeed7. The white spots are just fibeglass dust that got stuck to it when I sat it down in the wrong place. There is a good 1/8 inch thick layer of fiberglass on top of the aluminum, and a slightly thinner layer underneath. I think there is enough material on there now to begin the final sanding. I don't want the box to be cumbersome and heavy; I just need it to keep out hot air and look somewhat attractive.

The hose is run straight back from the scoop through a lil hole in between the radiator and frame. If you still have the AC you may not have enough room to fit it through. I will post the hose and routing pics in the next stage, once I get the thing painted and ready to go.

The tube is actually about 2.25 inches around, although in the pic the shadow kinda makes it look smaller. I would recommend using at least a two inch tube to supply air.

My old set-up was just the sheet of aluminum like you see in the pic on the car. I decided to take the aluminum box off and ADD fiberglass to it. So it is an aluminum air box that is covered with two layers of fiberglass mat and resin. You could start out using just cardboard and fiberglass over top of that, but I had the aluminum air-box already so it was just easier to lay the fiberglass on that. The pics are not really in chronocological order.

I would love to make these things and sell them to everyone; but I just don't have the time. It takes a few days just to do the fiberglass part (drying time). I am hoping that some of you guys will look at these pics and say "hey, I can do that." Because you can, and it is not that hard. All you really need is a $7 sheet of aluminum, a pair of cutters to cut the aluminum with, and a rainy Sunday afternoon. The fiberglass is just to make it look better. The tube is not even needed. Just the airbox itself, made out of plain aluminum will make a worthwhile difference.

Ill consider making them out of fiberglass and/or CF/kevlar. How many people would be interested? Price will depend on what its made out of, and what I decide for a filter and such. I just want to gauge the interest.

I will buy one but will it ever be finished?
It seems like everyone is going to make a great product to sell but then you never hear anymore about it.
I want a carbon fiber one if you are thinking about making them.

If you never noticed before, I do not take orders for something new until I have old projects finished. Thats why it took me so long to do the mold for the surrounds. I WILL be delivering surrounds before I start taking orders for the air box. I just want to know how many people are interested.

Im not pissed off. It takes a lot more than one comment to make me mad. I was just letting you know that wasnt how it is. I have too many things going on right now, as is. Taking on another project would just make everything worse.

So does that mean we will have to continue waiting to see the carbon fiber surrounds? If you have pics **** email them to me i can get them online for ya. If its a matter of you dont have pics thats a different story, but if you need someone to host i can get it done for ya. I know there are quite a few people (and quite a few $$$ to be made just need to see the product) interested in purchasing them. Let me know if i can help out.

Taking on another project would just make everything worse.

that was my remark ....why start a new thread on the intake box when you have 100 people droling over the surronds

i just taught people would get the impression your not intrested in making the surronds if you start asking about other products
