air silencer

Okay, I searched, no yelling.... I have an S5 'vert and I have to keep the ACV because of the actuators is operates, but can I remove that big-*** silencer thing without harming anything? I can't imagine it makes that much noise, but the hose coming off of it and the box it goes to under the left headlight is truly impressive. How much noise am I in for? Is this thing way over engineered or what???? I hope it IS noisy, but is it a bad noise??? Can someone impersonate it for me?? (j/k)

Try this: Unhook the hose coming out of the air-pump and run the car. That's the noise you'll be hearing if you ACV dumps to the engine bay instead of the silencer. It's not a plesant noise if you ask me.

Re: air silencer

Why are you so worried about it? It weighs practically nothing and performs a useful function. As suggested above disconnect the relief hose at the ACV, then decide for yourself about the noise.

I once tried running with no seats, no doors, no shift ****, no steering wheel (used vice-grips), no carpet, no tail lights, no shoes/socks/underwear, and I ran along side the car to save weight.

I pulled mine last year. I also pulled the ACV and rigged a pressure relief directly off the pump. It makes a purr sound that can be heard only with the hood up.

Uh, I am still not clear if removing the silencer has a detrimental effect or not guys! It's not about weight, it is about cleaning up the engine compartment mostly. One thing I learned about weight savings from scratch-building an airplane: take care of the ounces and the pounds take care of themselves......

It will cause no problems whatsoever. It's just to keep you from hearing that air-pump noise. If you can live with that, you're fine to **** can the silencer.

what is it like a gargle sound? I've removed the air pump before and ran the car. it started fine. didnt idle but it sounded like my car was carburatred. Is that the sound you guys are talking about?

i have mine removed. i think you save a little more weight when you also take off the brackets holding it on. it gives you a muffeled vaccum cleaner sound, very noticible on decelaration. not much noticable otherwise. no detrmeental effects, just a sucksion sound. yea there is a lot of tubing that goes with it. theres a big *** container under the headlight also that is another muffler for it, nothing more. i say take it all off.

and, dont forget to remove your valve stem caps. thats a good gram or two of weight. make sure you vaccum the carpet. dust can weigh you down some too id imagine.

Hey, I never thought about the valve caps before!! Seriously, I may be a little psychotic about weight in my car... You know you have gone too far when you no longer carry the owners manual and you carry a maximum of two CDs with you at a time. I weigh EVERTHING I add or remove LOL!!! I almost cried when I weighed the new wheels, the only exception to my credo of not adding weight unless it adds performance.....

yea, especially if youre using crome valve caps. them little buggers must weigh 2 grams. remove your window tint too, that must weigh a 1/4 gram. and the lightbulbs from your parking lights, break lights. thats another gram!! hell, take out your headlights while your at the track too. thats a flat pound right there. you could remove the rubber from your wiperblades, the lens cover for the dome light, remove one of the lugnuts from each tire.

you could also remove the stickers under the hood that tell you about the a/c usage and the warning labels about coolant and what not. just scrape them off. that will make up for other 1/4 gram of the valve caps, giving you a whole 1/2 gram reduction

I know what you mean about airplanes. It is intresting when you look at a C172 and think it grosses at only 2300lbs. It is larger than a car...but weighs so much less.

Of offset 40mph collision testing did not factor the design of the plane

Well, I know aviation gas (100 octane Low-Lead aka: 100LL) weighs 6 pounds per gallon. I am guessing that auto fuel is very close. I never fill my gas tank more than half full..... LOL
