Air pump, or lack of?
I just purchased an 88 GXL in great shape. However the previous owner dumped the air pump and cats.
My question is, How do the secondary ports function, and can or will they work without an air pump?

Oh and if you need to know what makes them function. There is a little line that runs from the split air pipe to a small nipple that goes to the actuators for the auxilary ports( a.k.a. 5th and 6th ports). The backpressure in the exhaust causes them to open up the sleeves.

Thanks the diagrams in the books make it look as if the air pump causes the actuators to open. one problem though, i can;t push the actuators open by hand. Can they be disassembled and cleaned? The front one is disconnected completely. Help!

Uh well the actuators are not what adds the extra air. It is the actual sleeves they turn inside the housings that open up and add more air to the mix. I have cleaned them out. One thing though if you are not familiar with takeing off the manis you might take a while or break something. I broke the oil injector lines so now I pre-mix but that is me. You have to remove the upper intake and then the lower. You allso should remove the actuators and see if the rods are movable there should be some resistance when you push on them.

After taking off the lower intake you can see and remove the sleeves from the block. I used about two cans of carb cleaner and a wire brush to remove most of the gunk on them. I also cleaned the LIM a little. You will need some RVT or a new gasket for the LIM and maybe for the UIM. You might also need a new set of oil lines for the injection system and some vaccume line for what ever might break off. I would suggest getting some silicone vac hoses. In my oppinion this would be a good time to start pre-mixing and remove the OMP system altogether. and you should check your Pulsation Damper(PD) too it might be leaky.
