Your air pump does what it says it does... well, it's supposed to. it's supposed to supply air at a low amount of psi to the ACV (Air control valve) if you have a naturally asperated engine (stock) with the function 6pi, then at around 3800 rpm the pressure produced is enough to open those ports for more air intake (I can't remember if it's more air intake, or more exhaust... it's probably exhaust, i haven't cleaned mine out yet so I can't remember from what I read).

the airpump also supplies fresh air to the main cat to help in completing the combustion the engine missed. If you live in an emissions state or don't know a local that doesn't do sniff tests then I say you may need it, also if you have an after market exhaust you may not need it at all (hi flow cat and all). to which you may just be placing weight up front in the engine bay.
