Angry Air Mix Motor (again)

Alright, so I think I have had just about enough of a non-adjustable temperature control motor in my car. I just got my rebuilt logicon (thanks Icemark) back today so I was going to swap in another air mix motor.

Lo and behold, the air mix motor moves to one of the extremes (hot or cold, I am not sure) and does not move anymore. I thought maybe that was one bad too so I got a KNOWN WORKING one and stuck it in there and it did the same exact thing. Is the failure rate for these blasted motors that high? I have three sitting here all from different cars and none work. What the hell gives?

if you have a bad air mix motor, it will take out the logicon's air mix control circuit... and once it is gone, then the logicon can take out any additional air mix motors.

Go ahead and send your logicon back and I will rebuild it again under my warranty, then you may wish to purchase a new air mix motor on ebay or Mazdatrix or mazdaformance or at the very least double check all the air mix motors (i'll send instructions) you have before plugging it the logicon again.

Gah... is this the same kind of thing that happens when the electronic MOP fails in an S5 car?

Just got a reply back from Mazdaformance this morning. Man, does that motor hit you where it really hurts. $190 shipped for just the motor alone. I wonder if there is anyway to rebuild the motors that I have.

Let me see if I have any spares this weekend and see if I can get you one. $190 is insane for something that I have bought from them for $60

That is cool, Mark. I really appreciate all your help. I much would rather part with $60 than $190. Especially when it is to a fellow forum member that does a good service.

Well, I decided to crack one of the "broken" ones open and this is what I found.

Now, correct me if I am wrong but that black band on the motor shaft is carbon build up, right? If I clean that off along with brushes, this motor should operate. In regards to that... what should I use to clean this off? Electronics and wiring is not my strong point so I need some help.

I fixed a mode control motor yesterday (the motor part is the same) if the windings on the rotor don't appear burnt, try bending the spring that holds the brush so that it contacts the commutator better. That fixed mine. You may want to clean the commutator with some contact cleaner or denatured alcohol.

I looked at your pictures again, and I only see one brush. should be 2. If you have 3 motors you should be able to piece together a good one.

I don't know why I remember hearing that the air mix motors, and the two other motors for the heater/ac system are interchangeable, is this true? I had a faulty airmix motor that I'm pretty sure is fixed, but I'd sure rather change it out for one of the motors that I know to be working, and is easier to get to in case the air mix motor isn't fixed.

No, all the other motors are set up differently.
