Question Air Conditioning

The Air Conditioning in my 91 Vert is blowing cold, but not cold enough. The previous owner said he had never really used it, so I'm thinking it probably just needs a little bit of refrigerant added. My question is, is there a way to look at the AC system and be able to tell if it has been converted to R134 or if it is still running R12? I have a line on some R12 and have recharged AC systems before, but am nervous about doing anything with it until I am sure. I plan on converting to R134, but would like to try to survive this summer without having to make the conversion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Darren

well i recently had the same problem u did and i saw that there were 2 lines for the a/c there is an adapter on the top line of your a/c ( metal color tube ) that has and adapter on it that is where u would have some sort of extension adapter on the tube . take the cap off and examine if the female adapter is pretty wide in diameter and if so u prolly have 134a but im pretty sure cars in 1990 had 134a n e ways
well jus my .02

I don't think you can look at it and tell, BUT....it's supposed to have different fittings installed on the fill valve AND an underhood sticker indicating it has been converted. If you don't see either of those then I would assume it has not been converted.

Just so I am clear, are you saying the fittings on the low pressure side are different for R12 and R134?

Thanks

R134 didn't come into play until '94, so if it is in any car before that the car was converted or is using the wrong type.

Thanks. I just spoke with the dealership and you are correct. Just wanted to be extra cautious so I don't hose anything up.

Thanks again,

Darren
