Aftermarket stereo into an '88 vert with headrest speakers?
Can an aftermarket stereo be swapped in and use the existing or at least the headrest speakers? I really some/all of them have amps.
How about the head unit itself, is there any adaptor kits so that the existing plugs can be used or do you need to splice all the wires?

You're pretty much stuck with a splice job.
Look for a head that will read CD-R's.
You can burn 6 hours of MP3's on a disc and they don't skip.
There are some 150-200 watt units out there for <$100 that will drive the stock speakers.

Found one post from last year that had a lot of info and Icemark's pics but did not really address the headrest speakers.
I have the factory CD that still amazingly works but skips when you hit bumps. Car is only a weekend drive but for those longer rides would be nice to have a better system.
Just redid my leather and like the novelty of the headrest speakers but it looks like everyone is recommending to ditch them, no easy way to bypass thier amps rewire into a new head unit?

I put a pioneer 6700 i think is the number in mine( the one with the dolphins and other misc. displays. Anywho when i wired it in i had to splice and bypass the amp for the headrest speakers to make them work. If you put ur hand under each seat and fish around you will find the wire that goes up to it. I cut about 4 inches away from the plug so i can re-install my factory unit if i choose to and then ran new wire to the rear channels on the deck. So its basically the rear speakers in a conventional car. I also had to bypass the amp for the door speakers to get them to work. When i installed mine with the kit that i got the only speakers that worked were the dash speakers. The amp that powers the door speakers is under the dash right behind the drivers side speaker thats under the dash. I again cut about 3 or 4 inches from the plug and bypassed that amp, i spliced the door speakers in with the dash speakers and with the pioneer deck they sound incredible. Theres no distortion even at the highest volumes and i can go down the highway with the top down and hear it crystal clear. The way the display is also makes it where you can see it even with the brightest sun shining on it. I got mine at best buy on sale for 187 bucks. Its worth every penny to me. It comes with a remote but most importantly for future upgrades it has both front and rear channel rca outputs but also has a dedicated subwoofer rca output. I have an alpine s series 8 in its own bandpass box in the trunk on a 300 watt amp and it sounds very clean and balanced. I hear every note with the top down and it sounds very distortion free. I like the pioneer deck i got the best because it has lots of tuning adjustments to make it sound right. I had an alpine deck in it and wasnt pleased with the sound im comparison to this pioneer. You cant beat the price for what you get either.
