aftermarket bins?

was there some sort of factory or aftermarket option for the rear bins? after going through picture of other cars, i noticed that my bins look nothing like those with normal bins.

i can snap some pictures later if anyone is curious.

I've never heard of aftermarket bins, just regular or the back seat. Post some pics up, I'd like to see them.

There were three setups:

SE's had storage bins as an option. If you didn't opt to get the bins, you just had carpet over the enclosure with panels under the carpet covering the holes where the bins would have been.

GXL's has back seats as an option.

Everything else had dedicated storage compartments with locking doors.

Actually, the storage bins became standard in 1988 (on cars not equipped with the optional rear seats) so SEs did have bins. Base, Luxury and Sport cars from 1986 and 1987 did not have standard bins, but could have them added as an option as you said.

Style Marque sold black fiberglass aftermarket bins that could be used as a cooler. The lid was designed to accept a piece of carpeting (scrap from cutting the mounting hole in the stock carpet), or you could order it with a pre-cut 6x9 oval hole for mounting a speaker. They also sold lid inserts for either stock or aftermarket bins. Options included a stainless steel "RX-7" logo lid, stainless steel lid with your personal initials, or a non-logo wood grain finish.

Wow, I never knew those existed. Interesting. However, it's hard to imagine how a single thin fiberglass lid would actually insulate anything. Your aftermarket bins do seem to have solid bottoms which is different from stock, in which the bottoms are basically bags made from carpeting.

man i really dig those black bins, u should make extras and slang em. 2 problems tho (that i could think of) one, i keep a bunch of loose hard objects in those bins. which im sure will make quite a ruccuss when the car is moving. and 2, they seem to scratch very easily. but now im just being picky

clean *** bins over all, and id rock them any day

Wow I've never heard of those. I don't have bins in either of my cars (back seats in the sport, flat shelf in the base)

I'm jealous of your taillights BTW .

You are supposed to use Blue Ice or similar ice packs. I guess you could use regular ice, but there isn't a drain, and I would imagine that you would have a much better chance of your bins turning into mold gardens.

I think they would be nearly worthless as coolers in a hot parked car, but they probably work pretty well when you are driving on a long trip, especially with the AC on.
