afterburn popping - how too adjust fuel/air

I have the popping after shifting and when letting off the gas - and I can smell the fuel. So if I am running too rich how can I adjust the fuel / air mixture on a 86 N/A GXL

Do you have air pump + ACV ???

if yes, then check operation of anti afterburn valve.
