rev the car up to at least 5k rpm now and/or give it a tiny bit of boost, or is it better to stay at <4k and not above atmospheric pressure?

When I start to break mine in, I'll be nice to it for the first 1500 miles. www.rotaryresurrection.com has a section in the tech area about breaking in a rebuild if you care to read it

In a old chinese womans voice: "NO BOOST!"

FC3S said 2000-3000 miles is when you get full complete breakin of parts

hrm i was told by a few engine builders to drive like i do normally... but keep the revs below 4500 and try not to boost the **** out of it.... normal driving i see 1 - 2psi boost once or twice every driving session.... after 1500 miles he said drive the motor normal and be happy with it.... but he said if there is something to do its not to DRAG RACE IT or race the motor at all.... so far i've never gone past 45-50% throttle. he also said leave the car in gear when i slow down for a lil bit... dunno why but he said make sure i do that.... well ill tell you how my rebuild goes!!!

I think the purpose of leaving it in gear when slowing down is to use engine braking to help break in motor. Not sure how that works though with helping the break in.

At this time you should be changing your oil. You shouldn't worry so much about driving the car. Just don't boost too high until after the 1500 mile. Slowly take it to redline after 700 miles. Important thing is not staying at a constant rev for long periods such as a long interstate drive. Do lots of city driving and change oil again at about 800 miles. The car will have somewhat low compression but it will get better as you put on more miles and everything seats in.

well, i changed the oil right before posting

reason i asked is because <4k rpm in a streetported turbo w/ no boost = **** poor acceleration and low low power. gets to be a pain in the *** sometimes when trying to just get away from traffic

Yeah i know what you mean. I dont have a turbo but i have a BIG *** SP on my S4 and keeping it under 4K was rediculous, i couldnt hardly get out from under my feet at that. But yeah man at 500 miles i wouldnt touch it, at maybe like 1000 id start inching up and maybe a few pounds. Sorry news, but better safe than sorry as the old saying goes.

It makes the seals flex the other way...

I remember reading a post not too long back where Kevin Landers stated that he had seen no negative effects of breaking in an engine at a constant engine speed...Just what I read...

I did 500 miles, no boost and under 4000 RPM. Changed the oil and then slowly went up on the RPMs and boost till I hit 1000 miles. Changed the oil and then drove it normally. It seems like every builder has his own theory on break in.

On my rebuild I changed oil at 700-800km (around 500miles), I kept it under 4500rpm until I hit around 2500-3000km (2000-2500 miles??) then I started pushing it to 5k rpm, then 6k rpm. During the break in period I never whent past 50% throttle. I now have around 4000km (3000ish miles??) and consider it broken in completely. I have S5 NA with streetport, TII housings, TII oil pump. I'd say best thing for a break in is drive it like you would if you were in traffic right downtown somewhere. Don't drive erratically, give it smooth throttle and don't rev the **** out of it, don't race the engine, just take it easy on it. The longer you do that the better all the seals can seat and all of that stuff. Enjoy the engine.

Dude, what is up with you, granted I didn't read his post, but nothing seems wrong, maybe his miles to KM is off but other than that it seems alright.

basically, the longer you break it in, the longer the engine will last. That pretty much applies to all engines. The better you treat the engine now, the better it'll treat you later.
