Question AFM gone bad, Please help, URGENT

Guys, My AFM is shot. I have been having all kinds of weird problems, then recently I started the car and it ran terrible, I thought the engine was toast. I checked the AFM, and the "plunger" or "bullet" was stuck closed. I moved and out and it would stick in different positions. I tried oil and that made it better, but it still gets a little stuck in the closed position and it is NOT smooth anywhere. I went to the dealer, a remanufactured one is $207 plus a $75 core charge, and a new one is $587!!!!!!

Questions:

1. Can I rebuild mine? Is this thing serviceable?

2 Should I waste my time getting one out of the junk yard?

3. How often to these things go bad?

4. Can I get one aftermarket somewhere else??

Thank You, ~Sky

I've got an AFM off my '90 GXL -- I'll doublecheck to make sure it's smooth. I don't know what they go for, but i'm thinking 100 shipped. PM me if you're interested!

HAILERS: eh, you're wrong on that one. The series 5 type goes for a hell of a lot more than the series 4

Are there any CT series 5 RX-7 owners who would be willing to let me try their AFM in my car for ten minutes? I will do all the wrenching and meet you at your place, please I need to know before I spend the dough if this is what is making my car so hard to start....

What leads you to believe it's the air flow meter? What does your car do or not do? (assuming that your's now moves freely and isn't stuck)

Is there a difference between S4 and S5 AFM??? If not I'll clean the S4 on up that I have, and sell it to you for like $20.

Yes, there's a difference. You can swap them but it requires some wiring changes.

I got the AFM, it works fine. The car still starts on one rotor but at least it starts now!!!! (it takes about 15 seconds for the rear rotor to get enough compression to light.....) ~Sky
