FWIW, I haven't forgotten about you I've been stewing over everything we've covered so far, and really am stumped! Okay, let's start from the beginning (sorry)...

Okay, the BAC is fine. Does it still click rapidly?

You're consistantly getting an AFM code, right? Have you or can you swap the AFM with a known-good unit? Your unit's resistance values checked out, right? And the car does run with the AFM disconnected, right?

Have you thoroughly checked for vacuum leaks? I mean EVERYTHING. Start at the AFM, and if it's a hole, plug it. If it's a hose, check it. All the way to the LIM-engine interface.

I've got a few theories, but I really want to eliminate as much as I can. Wild goose chases suck... I'm trying, tho

A friend of mine and I were looking at the car today, and we tried a few things. Since it had been a while since I had done this, I unplugged the AFM and it wouldn't start. So I don't know what I've done since then, but now it doesn't run even with it unplugged.

I read on here somewhere that if you jump the single green connector by the battery to ground, that it would basically let the ECU ignore all the signals sent for idle so you could adjust it. It still dies.

I do constantly get an AFM code. Today we successfully reset the ECU and after that we pulled the codes again it flashed the AFM code only. I did find a couple of interesting things. We noticed that there is a loose connection in the AFM plug. With the key on, the BAC would not click anymore, as it used to. But then I started playing with the AFM plug and when I pushed on it with some force, the BAC would start clicking again. We tried starting it while I held the plug on firmly, and it still didn't want to run. So there is definitely something wrong there, but if it the car doesn't start even when I hold it in place, it can't be what is causing the problem, right?

I have not THOROUGHLY check for vacuum leaks. I just tested the vacuum on start up from one spot on the 'upper upper' manifold.

One more thing, and then I'll stop. I pulled off the upper intake manifold and noticed a plug that isn't plugged in. But I can't find any damn place to plug it in at! So I thought I would post a pic and see if anyone might know where this thing goes.

Hm. Well, your picture didn't come through, but I'm going to assume it's a green connector, right? Mazda uses green connectors for all of their diagnostics, so there'd be nothing to connect it to...

I hate to say it, but I'm leaning more and more toward a bad wiring harness. The BAC clicking, the AFM code, random-*** other codes, starting then dieing. I just don't know what to say.

As is usual, you may want to join the fc3s_org@yahoogroups.com email list. Email Dale Clark and ask him to add you. There are some top-notch guys there who may be able to help you more than I can. Seth Bibler is one guy to look out for - he knows his S5 N/As. PM me if you need more info.

I'm REALLY sorry that I couldn't help more. I'll keep cracking at it, but like I said, it's looking more and more (well, to me) like a bad harness. How good are you with electronics? If you're good, it's time to start doing continuity checks - use a current checker with one lead at each pin on the ECU and the other at its corresponding location in the engine bay.

Gimme some time to think, tho, before you start doing that - that's a several-day job. I'll see if I can think of any other avenues to check...

Damn. I have no idea what in the hell that is. Sorry - it's not on the TIIs.

Like I said, try emailing the FCs list - there's a bigger knowledge base there...

Just thinking... have you tried checking your fuel pump?
