Adjusting cold idle system on S4 NA

My car has been in and out of the shop for a while. I'm trying to get it to start right. I think I need to clean and re-adjust the throttle body. And rather than sending it into the shop again, I'm gonna do it myself.

I have read the FSM on adjusting the idle cam and stuff. Are there any pointers or tips you guys can give me? thanks

Sometimes my car will start, rev to 3000 then stall. Other times it holds a cold start rpm at 4000 for a minute and goes to 2500 then continues to warm up. Other times it revs to 2500 rpm and then slowly goes down.

I know it should kick up to 3000 for about 10 secs and then go to 1500rpm and continue to warm up. That's what it did for years, and then stopped. I've already had the thermowax replaced.

4000 for a full minute sounds way wrong. I'd start to suspect the bac is staying stuck open when it's cold. Try taking it off, laying it on it's back and letting some cleaner sit in it overnight. Something similar to fuel injector cleaner or the like. Then exercise it by applying 12v and a ground momentarily several times and wiping it clean. Don't force the poppet inside with anything. That outfit is like a vibrator cycling at approx 120hz give or take. Don't EVER short the two wires in the connector that goes to it or BAM, the transistor in the ECU goes KAPOPP! I'd try that prior to adjusting the throttle body.

Already replaced the BAC valve with one that I know works. It's uglier but works.

I'm thinking worst case scenario it's a vaccuum leak somewhere. But I don't know where. I'm gonna check all the markings on the idle cams and see where they all line up to in the cold. It COULD be a solenoid somewhere though.....probably is. When I got my car back the Power steering was unplugged, so who knows.

Me too. My car starts and idles at over 3000rpm. After a couple minutes it gets pretty hot, but the idle doesn't go down. If I blimp the accelerator, it just makes it worst. Any answers?

You could have a sticky or too tight throttle cable. If that isn't the problem then read through the following thread and read up on the thermowax unit.
