I'm thinking about doing the same, but let's say i use GSL-SE rotor housings with a distributer and coils. Can i get rid of the ecu entirely and run the car with the megasquirt and keep the ignition distributer based?

Okay, that's good to hear. I'm building a hybrid motor using ported gsl-se rotor housings with S5 or S4 internals with the 2nd gen intake manifold, Is there anything i should know before building this motor about fitting it into an S5 or S4?

biggest issue you'd have would be matching up a wiring harness, so just stick with the same series as the parts that you're sticking on and you'd be ok.

I guess i should clarify a bit, i blew the motor in my GSL-SE and want to start over with a different car (a 2nd gen), my plan is to find one in a junkyard with a straight body and good interior and blown motor. I plan on putting these two motors together and build one good motor to place in the FC, I'm wanting to use my GSL-SE rotor housings for porting and if i get a Megasquirt ECU, use the distributer to control the ignition. I shouldn't face any problems with doing this, correct?

Nope, it'd be fairly easy, best bet would be to go with a s4 body/ecu, it's easier to come by the ECU's if you happen to fry one in the process, and they're generally cheaper to get parts for.

Good point, you caught me not paying enough attention to what I was saying, I must've mixed up the two posts. If you run it absolutely standalone you've got no worries. Have you checked out their mailing lists?

Yes, they're vary reliable, very customizable, and very open with what they do. And the community is great and helpful. If you're using stock FC sensors, you're going to need to change a couple of resistors, as the FC's we either too close in resolution on their sensors, or too wide, I forgot which, but I can help you when you get that far

there's also the yahoo group, just goto http://groups.yahoo.com and type in megasquirt, you can get the configuration program and such (MegaTune 2.15)
Not sure but I believe I read somewhere that It's not a good idea to use post '86 rotors in pre '86 rotor housings.
Something about them slightly changing the shape of the rotor housings in '86.I think it may have been in an older Racing Beat catalog.I'll see it I can't find it.
