ACV Problem series 5 n/a (please help)

Ok, I was looking around my engine bay and noticed this spring poking out of the rear of my Air Control valve. I thought that there was supposed to be an air tube or something hooked up at this location. Also my car has a hard problem starting when it is warm, then shut off for about 10 min. It starts good in the morning but once it's warm and I shut it off for about 10 minutes it cranks good but isn't starting. I don't think it's flooding either because I held the gas to the floor to cut the fuel (series 5). Also I pulled a spark plug when it was cranking but not starting and the plug was dry. I can sometimes get it to start by pushing the gas pedal at various depths while cranking (this is why I think its not flooding).

Questions:

Is my acv broke?

What hooks up to the rear of the acv where this spring is sticking out of?

Could my acv be causing my starting problems when the engine is hot and sitting for a few minutes?

Where does the acv route air to? I think the air from the air pump goes into the acv then into the cat, does the acv send air anywhere else?

I have this same problem. I have my cat removed as well as the split air pipe that routes air from the acv to the cat. I found that it started better after i put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner though it. Turns out the hot starting problem came back after a week. But hopefully someone has some insight on this.

Sorry you have this problem but feels good to know I'm not alone. I just can't seem to crack the starting problem. When it's cold, it starts right up but once I have driven somewhere and it's warm then shut off, when I return to the car it won't start. I really think somehow it's not getting the fuel or air it needs? When it's cold, there is probably some type of system assisting it to start but when it's warm I guess this "system" isn't working and whatever is supposed to give the fuel or air isn't working? BTW all my emissions equipment is intact (except for the apparently broken acv).

Has anyone solved this "Hot Start" Problem on your series 5 N/A?

If I remember correctly and Looking at the right part of the acv in the first picture, that is actually a place where an electrical connector hooks up from the acv to the wiring harness.

Let me go out to my garage and look at it again.

Yep.

Just to confirm I'm looking at your picture right. You should have two electrical wires/connectors coming out of the ACV.

How many do you have?

Ok, I do have 2 electrical wires coming out of it. One on the side of the acv that points towards the front of the car, another one on the side of the acv pointing towards the front right fender of the car. The hole with the spring coming out of it is pointing towards the rear of the car (firewall).

Are you sure there aren't 3 electrical connectors? I did see a similar black plastic cylindrical connector resting on top of my engine right behind the water pump. It was not hooked up to anything, just laying loose but I couldn't figure out where it went so I just left it there.

thanks
John

Ok, after briefly looking through a friends Workshop manual it appears that the part I am referring to may be the Split Air Solonoid Valve. I always assumed that the whole thing was the Air Control Valve, but it looks like the two valves are connected. If I am looking at the right picture in the FSM It does look like it is an electrical connection that is supposed to hook up here because the pic shows the spring.

Can anyone tell me if air control valve and split air solonoid valves are the same between the series 4 (86-88) and Series 5 (89-91).

Also does anyone know what the split air solonoid valve does and would it affect hot starting?

thanks
