ACK! Brake problems! I don't wanna die!

Alright, so my brakes aren't working so hot anymore. I just recently put new struts on my car, and while I had the wheels off I looked at the pads and they are fine.

The main problem is that it feels like there is no pressure in the lines most of the time. I have to pump the pedal to stop the car and even then it takes 4 of 5 pumps before I am stopped.

I was thinking that my master cylinder was probably leaking but it doesn't look like my fluid level is going down any. The other weird thing is that the brakes work like they should when the car is off. Like if I pump the pedal when it's just sitting in my driveway it's hard as a rock, but when i do that it sorta makes a weird popping noise.

The brakes also seem to have something to do with the RPMs, I don't know how that would have anything to do with the brakes but it seems like it. If I am cruising in 3rd and I am braking, and I drop it into 2nd the pedal will suddenly lose almost all it's pressure and go to the floor really easy unless I pump it again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I didn't mess anything up when I put my new struts on, so I am really stumped here. I don't wanna replace anything I don't have to, so I'd like to know what is wrong before I start spending money.

Sounds like its your master cylinder. The brakes feel hard as a rock in your driveway with the car off because there is no power assist. In essense its just because the pedal is harder to push in general with the car off. If you have to pump it, then the cylinder isn't holding pressure in the brake lines and the fluid is slipping through it back into the resevoir.

edit: Oh yeah like he said, do that after bleeding the brakes. Start with the simple stuff, if it's not that then it's probably your master.
