AC sucks in 85+ degree temps, otherwise fine. Choices...

My Vert's AC is not able to keep up with the super hot Florida summer. It blows nice and cold in the mornings when the temps are still in the low 80s, but in the afternoons, particularly after running the car and letting it sit, the AC will not blow very cold at all.

My mechanic said that he doesn't have the capability to do an R12 recharge. Should I go around to like an "Ice Cold Air" AC shop and get an R12 recharge or should I just allow him to do the R134 conversion? I'm going out of town tomorrow for a week, so it would be nice to have it done while I'm gone.

Thanks.

I had the R134a conversion.
In the few days we had 90-100F up here in Canada with 75% humidity, my AC works great.
Might be something to think about...

I had mine retrofitted and recharged with R134a. Seemed to do ok in moderate temps but didn't do so well in 90+ weather. So I took it out and now I run open-window A/C.

Just make sure whoever does your conversion does it right. Your AC system may explode if done incorrectly.

Do you know if you have a Sanden or Nippondenso compressor? The Nippondenso (SP, I know), has the two hose with B'nuts at the rear of the compressor and the Sanden has sort of a block on the rear, attached with a single bolt.

All R12 systems are supposed to be converted to R134a. You dont need to look for an R12 recharge you need to retrofit your car.
Just bring it to a trusted mechanic that specializes in A/C repair. You would also want to find out if your system has any leaks and that all components are working well. All that can contribute to insuficiant cooling with an A/C system.
Just try to bring it somewhere that has someone that specializes in A/C but also that has some knowledge of a rotary.

An AC shop will want to examine your system for leaks before they pump some freon(r12) in, and probably want you to leave your car there (maybe not, try it).
All auto AC systems leak, even new, if you haven't put any freon in in a long time, like a year or two, the leak is normal.
IMHO, the easiest and cheapest route to fix your car (if it only needs freon), is to take this online, OPEN BOOK test http://www.epatest.com/ the 609, and go on ebay and get some r12. I put it off for a while, then kicked myself for not doing sooner.
A few years back you would go to an auto parts store and pay a few dollars for a can, now it's a $20 test and a $20 can. Its still legal if you have the cert.
Or pay a few hundred for a proper conversion that won't cool as well, and have to leave your car at the shop to have it done. Although I have read that if you get a parallel flow condenser that gets rid of heat better, and a pusher fan for idleing it may cool as well $, I've noticed that some FC's have a pusher fan already.

Just my two cents.
