Question ABS / Standard Brake System Question?

My ABS unit is leaking bad, and I don't want to try to fix it. I want to put a Non ABS unit in that I got from the Junkyard. I won't have access to the one I got from the Jyard for a while, so I can't check it. So my question is, is the Master Cylinder different on a car with ABS and a car without it? Can I just use the same cylinder and replace the brake lines with the ones from the non-abs and remove the abs unit, or do I need to replace the master cylinder as well?

Thanks guys.

I*m going to do the same thing.. you have to geta mastercylinder off a non abs car.. that i do know. then the lines too..if you look in a chilton repair book towards the back in the brake section it shows youthe layout fora non abs car and an abs car.. makes it real easy to see whats involved. hope this helps

I just went through the parts fiche and it definately gives two different part numbers for the non-ABS and ABS masters. It also looks like the non-ABS master has an additional outlet on it's casting from the repair manual. The tough part is that in '89 all turbos came with ABS, so I bet the non-ABS part number is the smaller bore master for use with the NA cars. You'll probably need to check into a '90 or new parts book to know for sure.

1989 Parts Fiche:
=======================
non-ABS master: FB02-43-400C
ABS master: FC4B-43-40Z

Ya, I had checked the parts fische prior to posting, and I noticed they were different part numbers. They also look different.

But I just needed to know if they were interchangable. Now that you point out it has an extra line coming out of it, that makes sense, cause it has to go to 3 brakes (front pass, front driver, and combined rears), where as the ABS unit only 2 lines come out, both going to the ABS unit.

So I guess I gotta wait to get my hands on that non abs one.

Thanks guys

You don't have to change the master cylinder. Many people have removed the ABS units without replacing any parts, or at least I did. I used a how-to I got from a website, can't remember the URL but it is out there if you search. I spent about $10.00 in parts and another $25.00 for tools I didn't have. It was pretty easy and I am pleased with the results.

But I don't want to flare and bend the lines. I just want to replace them with non-abs ones altogether. Will the non-abs ones plug into the ABS master cylinder?
