About to start a 5 lug swap, what parts do i need to order before i start?

Ok, so i am about to start a 5 lug swap from my parts car to my car. Both cars are complete right now but when doing something like this there are always little thing you end up needing half way through. I want to know what those are?

I have spent the last hour searching through the small amount of real info on the 5 lug swap i can find. a few threads mention that there are some bushings that are easy to replace while you are in there. Anyone know which ones?

I am also changing out my shocks and rear diff while i am doing this.

So any little parts that i should have on hand before starting?

Also, anyone know of any good writeup with pictures? (seen that one without them and then one on here for the rear brakes with them but thats it)

anthing else i should know before starting? I can't have the cars sitting half taken apart for more then a few days or my pescky neighbor will report them.

Swap the whole rear subframe, it will make swapping the diff and the rear 5 lugs 1000 times easier. The fronts are cake.

Well you might wanna get DTSS eliminators, when I was unbolting the knuckles from the trailing arms the DTSS bolt was seized to the bushing ruining it.
Check the wheel bearings, you can press out good ones out of the 4 lug knuckles and press um into the 5 bolt ones if you need to. But, if your doin the rear end and 5 lug do the whole subframe its only a few bolts..4 or 6 I can't remember.

Sounds like a good idea to me, though having not been under the car that much yet, how do you remove the sub-frame, what bolts and what all comes with it? Details, lol

Good suggestion, though really i would rather keep the DTSS working if i can. Are the bushins the same for the 4 lug and 5 lug? Can you get busings that will keep the DTSS working?

To remove the subframe you will need to - remove cat back, unbolt driveshaft, then there are 6 bolts for the subframe, 2 subframe mounts, 2 diff mounts, 2 support mounts. You also have to unbolt the camber link (I think that is what it is called)
All in all its pretty simple, there are probably better writeups on how to do it. Its heavy so do it with a friend to help bring it all the way down. I usually use two jacks to rest in on and it gives it wheels to move it around. Don't lower it on your self like you could a trans, the subframe is very very heavy.

You can replace the DTSS bushings, but its not worth it because the only manufacturer of the DTSS bushing is Mazda and I think they want like $300 per bushing. As far as keeping the bushings, you don't see modern performance cars using rear steer, so the idea failed, might as well delete them.
Though if you are swapping the whole subframe don't even bother removing the hubs.

Yeah, i think i am going to do the whole subframe, it sounds a LOT easier!

Only proble i have is that i don't know what diff is in the parts car, i am 99% sure it is an LSD but which one i don't know.

The car had a sport spoiler on it at one point so it might be a sport diff. But the PO had done a TII swap to it so it could be a TII as well.

Anyone know for sure how to find out?

If it is a TII i have heard you can redrill the NA driveshaft to make it fit?

If it is a turbo diff then it will be an LSD.
If its an LSD it SHOULD have a tag that says to use LSD fluid.
If you can't tell then just jack up the car and spin one wheel, if the other wheel spins in the same direction then its an LSD.

The TII diff also has a bigger case then the N/A and different halfshafts.

I don't know what you can do about modifying the driveshafts to work in an TII diff and N/A Trans. Mazdatrix has a driveshaft built for this though. Why not swap to the turbo trans and use the turbo driveshaft?

I have already done all that testing to the diff.

No tags, when you spin the wheel, the other one does nothing, which leads me to think it is an LSD but a bad one.

The reason i can't swap trannys is that the parts car is missing an engine and tranny, hence why it is a parts car lol.

all i have is a diff that i don't know where it came from. Anyone have something i can messure to know for sure?

DTSS is stupid, but I still have it. Yeah the knuckles, DTSS and bearings are the same, just the hubs are different. What I did was the 5 lug assembly was fucked, so I pressed out the bearing and hub and put it into one of my 4 lug knuckles with the DTSS still intact.

But yeah, its really not hard at all to drop your subframe, go that route.

Seeing what everyone is saying i am going that route. Easier the better.
