99 Maxima SE vs 89 TII, + FR vs. FF takeoff

Two questions:

This kid I know has a 99 Maxima SE (v6, 5spd, 190 hp stock) with intake/exhaust.

All he does is talk crap, and so we're going up to the not-so-local dragway sometime to race.

I'm wondering how close we'd run.

Also, is there a difference between takeoff on a FF and a FR? Just wondering if you get a better gain outta dragging the car or pushing it.

Have you guys raced before from a roll? If it was pretty close you should win at the drag strip. RWD has a definate advantage in drag racing, due to the weight transfer to the rear wheels on a launch, and FWD has the advantage once it gets traction, due to less drivetrain loss.

what kinds of mods do you have?? I raced a TII who had intake and exhaust, and it took him untill 190km/h to pass me. My other friend who has a 95 maxima gxe (lightest of the forth gens) with intake, y pipe, no cat, and b pipe (basically full exahust) and lightweight SSR comps with toyo TS1's, but he is also auto. We raced from a stop and he got the jump on the launch and my front bumper was at his rear bumper the entire time. So if you are not modded more than I/E it probably be close. I also have a vid of the maxima run on my camera, just got to figure out how to put it on the net.

oh the reason he got out of the whole better is probably beacuse my tires are really gay, on the left I have a nearly worn out goodyear regatta, and on the right I have this really cheap *** motomaster all season, I think it would have been different had I some half decent tires, but oh well.

Maximas are rather heavy. I think they weigh around 3200-3300. So, with your TII you have both a weight and power advantage.

Barring any screwups, you should take him.

actually my buddies max weighed in at around 2930. There isn't much in weight difference, and don't put anything past those VQ engines they pull hard up top.

If your turbo is running right and your car is in good condition I would expect you to take him easily. The '99 max is almost identical to the '96 I have. Even with mods it isn't going to be pushing all that much hp. That is unless he switched the intake manifold to the (MEVI intake) then he could be 230hp+ range.

Out of the box my '96 maxima runs about even with my slightly modded '86 N/A. I've yet to mod my maxima.

The series 4 SE maximas (95-99) are listed as 3010Lbs.

Also the limited slip diff option on the maximas is VERY rare. I would expect in a drag you'd have a major traction advantage.

i find it hard to believe an intake manifold could net 40+hp on an NA engine.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but maybe you meant intake manifold + heads?

TID, turbo back exhaust, fuel pump and FCD...sure it costs some $$ but your rex will be making around 230 hp at the wheels on 10 psi and you'll be in the high 13's...that means byebye maximas - all of them hehe

Darkwaveboi don't doubt the manifold!!!! Its true, on maxima.org I've seen Dynos of the middle east variable intake manifold, where it raises the HP 40!!!! Some guys that have say it feels like a shot of nos when you open it. Thats basically the only diff between the NA spec and everywhere else maxima's. Just think if the VDI manifold adds like 10 HP for S5's then the same thing to a V6 is not that far off.

come on now guys its a maxima...a MAXIMA. Its not even in the same class as an FC. Seems pointless to me and if you dont beat him itll really be bad. Theres no way in hell a maxima can beat a TII unless the driver REALLY sucks. Goodluck dude.

i used to have a fully modded max. 4th gen max can run 14.2 with intake and exhaust. the variable intake does help alot, but you don't see the power until 3 gear. although maxima is a grocery getter, but it's fast. the vq was designed very well, and it's good for turbo application. nismo kinda just realized how good the vq series are, and just started to researching turbo kit for the Z which uses the vq series. my max beats my prelude, and my prelude beats TII. doesn't say anything, but personally i think that if you can drive, a light modded tII would take a max no problem, and by the way, my max is a GLE.

I love guys that think maxima's are nothing but japanese equivalents to oldsmobiles or that they are slow. 2k2's can run 14.1's stock with good driver and decent weather.

I guess anything is possible, but I'd have to see it to believe it completely stock(tires, engine, exhaust, intake, interior, etc).

I pulled VERY hard on a newer maxima...it had some shitty sounding exhaust.....He wouldn't leave me alone, so I floored it at about 4.5k in second at pulled till the buzzer hit , guess I had about 4-5 cars on him so I let off. I love 4.30 gears. BTW my car ran 14.2 with just a intake cone @5.5 psi...with full exhaust and the suspension setup I have now who knows what it did run....this was the night i blew the engine.....5.5psi no intercooler, yeah Im a stupid *** but today I called Kevin Landers....S4 streetport!

we've only been in a race situation once before, where he launched about a 3/4 second before me and i was able to close the gap to where i was at his rear door

however he really is a shitty driver and was weaving all over the road, so i dont plan on trying that again on a back street. i figure that if we goto the dragway, it'll be a hell of a lot more legit.

he only has intake/exhaust, he wouldnt even know what a manifold looked like if you showed him. the kid thinks modding his maxima is getting the skyline front end for it. i guess i feel like i can take him no problem but the fact i wasn't able to blow him away even though he got a head start makes me wonder. if i only beat him by a car length he'd prolly make some dumbass excuse.

it's a 99 SE. the newer ones have 254hp if i remember right but his is the 3rd gen which only has 190 or so.

argh. i just hate this kid so bad. he's a goddamn poser and he thinks that just because he got a decent import, he's like Vin Diseal now or something.

erk.

That makes me laugh cuz I bought a SE maxima (with 5-speed) for my wife to drive around with the kids in it. Fun car but definatly a family car.

Let me count them doors...1,2,3,4 Yup family car =)

Don't get me wrong I like maximas. One of the few family cars that can get up and move and is AVAILABLE with a manual trans but it is still FWD and a 4 door.

Oh was the rear fin added to the car in the pic? Doesn't look like an SE as it has no fog lights and the handles are chrome. No sunroof either...Shame. Even my family hauler has a sun roof

Maximas are good cars and an excellent choice. I'll still drive the rx though

uh... first of all 99 is 4th gen, the 5th gen comes with 225 until 2002 model which comes with 255. 3rd gen SE with vg series engine are actually faster than the 4th gen with same 190hp. 4 doors mean the car is a family car??? what about WRX??? What about even just the wagon WRX??? Evolution??? all comes with 4 doors. They kick our *** all day stock...what do you have to say to that???
