91 Timing issues
91 Timing issues
I recently bought a 91 NA, wonderful car, but it lacked top end. I took it into mazda just to have them give it a once over, and they told me "your idle is too high, and you should have your timing checked". So they adjusted what I thought was the idle and sent me off. Come to find out, it wasn't the idle they adjusted, it was the TPS. After fixing that (i was shooting 1' flames), the top end problem got worse. I changed my plugs out, and went to check my timing. According to the shop manual, there should be 2 timing marks. Red and Yellow for trailing and leading. Mine are white. There are two marks on the shaft pully, about an inch apart. Which is which?
When looking at the pulley from the front of the car....the left mark (first in clockwise rotation) is the yellow (leading) mark. The right mark is the red mark (comes second in rotation) and is the trailing mark.
If I recallcorrectly...the yellow mark is 5deg ATC?

The trailing should be adjusted by the ECU...I dont really know how it works, but you can only check and set timing based on the leading, and then let the ECU do the trailing adjustment.
