These are from my 90 GXL. I think the 91s are basically the same. I just recovered them with new leather (except the driver's bottom --- just a low mileage seat).

FWIW those 1990 seats pictured above look identical to the ones in my 1991.

There is definitly different seat models in the differnt years, at mazdaformance.com in the clearance items for the rx-7 parts you will see various oem replacement covers available, they are very specific as to model/style/colour and material.

Those seats are part of the optional A package available in 91, and not the standard seat. If they came with leather originally then the car came with both A and B option packages.

The standard seat in 91 was the same as this:

I like the seats in my 88 GXL a lot better than my 90 GXL.
The seats themselves LOOK nicer in the 90, but the 88's had way stiffer and protrusive side bolters....
I think they had to let them out a bit for Fat *** north americans! LOL. The 88's cradled you alot more.

My 88AE seats were leather, but I like the 90-91 seats I put in much better. Leather, adjustable headrest, lumbar adjustment on drivers seat, also tilt on driver seat.

The AE leather seats were all one solid piece with none of the above mentioned adjustments.

The GXL and Vert seats all had the adjustable head rest, lumbar on the drivers seat, front seat height/tilt on the drivers seat.

Didn't matter what year.

Here is what I did. Use at your own risk!

Start with decent quality leather cleaner (I used Meguires got it @ Wal-Mart) do not get the conditioner/cleaner .. Start with just the cleaner.

Then go to the shoe section in your local Wal-Mart, get KIWI black leather dye (leather dye, no shoe polish, or anything stupid like that), liquid form, with a sponge on top of it, get 2 bottles. Then go back to the automotive section (You must pick up the items in this order) now get a leather conditioner (again I used the step 2 meguires) conditioner ONLY no cleaner.

Now go home, get on some shitty clothes (or do it naked, that’s what I did) and mix about a 40/60 mix of dye/conditioner, only AFTER thoroughly cleaning the seats with the cleaner only, and making sure to wipe off all the cleaner before proceeding.

Now, with your 60/40 mix and a clean terry cloth rub the mix into the entire seat put it on very thickly massaging it in really well, let that sit over night. Wipe if off with a clean cloth until no more comes off on the cloth.

Now, take a look, see how it’s coming along, and reapply if necessary, I applied 2X. Then make sure you let the leather dye dry for at least 48 Hrs to insure you don’t *** up your clothes when you sit.

Should come out looking almost new. Fills in all the seams and fine lines, and softens the leather.

Give it a shot, they come out fabulous.

At least mine did.

P.S. if you decide to do this while naked, be sure not to get the dye anywhere a scrub brush is likely to be very uncomfortable.

P.S.S. I highly advise a large quanity of cold beers for such a mindlessly boring process.

P.S.S.S. If you have an attractive person of the opposite sex to help rub down the leather while naked, it gets the larger cracks and seams out.

I forgot to mention the obvious: this is all alot easier with the seats pulled out of the car.

Here is the scoup. my AE seats were thrashed! So i bought a pair of 90-91 leather seats (mentioned above) from a fellow forum member in the bay area. Good seats, but not perfect (as expected, for what i payed) So I was reading around the internet on how to "clean then up a bit" you know, soften them a bit, and get out some of the fine lines, and discoloration on the deeper lines. Well i came across an Audi site where a guy sugested somthing similar to what i ended up doing. Problem is most of the stuff he reccomended I could not get my hands on locally. So i compromised, I bought similar products, and made a few adjustments to my likings. My current seats I have done this too, the difference when completed was like day and night. All the small cracks disapeared, all discoloration back to normal, they look almost brand new. I can post pics later if it will make you sleep better. (at work right now)

The only thing is, I have NOT driven this car in the summer heat while sweating on the seats since I have done this. I HIGHLY dount the leather dye will bleed onto your clothes (if you let it dry well, it's made to dye leather for **** sakes) but anything is possible, so like I said try at your own risk. Or try a little area first.

I didn't even think to take any before pic's ... I wiish I wouldhave, you would really be impressed.

Here are a couple of Pics. All thise fine lines you see in the seat now, were not only much worse before, but they were also like a tan color in the cracks, where the original color had been worn off;
