Except they can't be bored out, there are no oversized rotors or rings, and good used replacement parts are almost non-existent. Great engines to work on amiright?

they are! even buying new rotor housings its almost the cheapest engine in the world to build... or actually to build a really really good rotary (new housings + seals) is way cheaper than any piston engine...

I'd say to actually check the housings first? No one can make the assessment that anything is junk without checking first. 133k is pretty up there. But you never know.

The problem with that theory is you could buy a lot of "low mileage" engines that still have junk housings. I suppose if you are poor, consider buying a different car? RX-7s can be great, reliable daily drivers as long as you know their history and they are well sorted, but buying used cars is always a crapshoot.

Locate a clean set of lower mile used housings with light wear and use those. The less wear on your housing surface, the more compression the rebuild will make. That's not to say that 133k housings won't be reusable; odds are they will be, unless the engine has sustained actual damage from broken seals. But, the housings will have that same 133k of wear when you rebuild with them, so the rebuild will not produce like-new compression values. This is where people are mistaken...they think that a rebuild automatically equals like-new engine and like-new compression. No, it all depends on what parts you're rebuilding FROM. If you have a 200k mile core that you send in for rebuild, you don't suddenly get back zero mile zero wear parts...you get back 200k mile parts with new seals in them. So, you select the components that you want to reuse or replace in the build, and that determines how good of a build you get back.

I had my S5 rebuilt at 215 km ( so about 130K miles) due to a failed coolant seal in the iron. Housings looked good and were reused, streetported and new basic rebuild kit for seals etc.. That was 10,000 miles ago and still running very strong .

I'd say its not a given that you need new housings

Be skeptical of people who condem parts w/o inspection and quickly suggest expensive alternatives. Look into Goopy Racing, they may have just what you need.

i've built engines with new housings/rotors/irons, and it really makes a difference. chamber sealing is the most important thing you can do in a rotary.

$1000 for both housings is reasonable. $1000 for a single housing is robbery.

If the housings you have are in good shape then have Karack on the forum refurbish them, its not expensive. Thats what i will be doin to my used ported housings.
