'89 Vert stock stereo system question *SEARCHED*

Hey all.

I am in the process of overhauling the stereo system in my vert.

I got the CD player in and everything, that's a non-issue. Soldered wires, all is hooked up fine.

the issue is that I only get sound from my front under dash speakers.

I am curious if the stock stereo ran a system of external amps...

I know the headrest speakers are amped by the unit behind the driver's seat. but are the door speakers amped as well?
I pulled the passenger door panel off and the speaker's hooked up (it's warped and thrashed... but will be replaced) I found a 4-plug harness under the dash on the passenger side. looks like 2-10gauge wires and 2-16gauge wires. so I am guessing those are for something that loves 12volt power... like an amp. but I couldn't find anything in reach of the harness to plug it in to.

I will be running all new wiring for the doors when I find a pair of components I want and the time to install... but until then it'd be nice if I could get a little more than mid-highs.

Thanks in advance for your input

Well, I gutted the interior of my 'vert yesterday and saw no such amps or anything, but I also didn't have the headrest speakers. You should be able to run new wires straight from the doors to your headunit to test them... Maybe you're depending on old, crappy, shot wires.

On my 91 base model there was a little amplifier I had to bypass to get the from speakers to work properly. After I unplugged it I had to connect 8 of the wires wires together. There were 6 speakers total on my car and I just hooked up 4 and left the two under dash speakers out.

I believe the door speakers are woofers and there should be a small silver amp near the steering column that drives these. At least that is where it is on my 88 vert, but I dont have the headrest speakers on mine.

The headrest speaker amp is mounted behind the drivers seat inside the read cargo bay. And, for what it's worth, S4 and S5 headrest speaker amps are NOT interchangable.

Save for the S4 amped vs S5 pre out signal to the headrest amp, pretty much the same.
