89 vert, electrical problems
This car was taken to the dealer before i bought it, and the dealer said it needed a new ECU and OMP. I bought the car like that. The car runs great, except the limp-home mode thing, and starts right up, every time.
After a few minutes of driving, the check engine light comes on, and the engine goes into limp-home mode. I attempted to check the codes, but the check engine light stays on constantly. It will not flash any codes, it just stays on.
I pulled the OMP off last night, and checked it out. It was filled with silicon gasket maker. I cleaned it out, and made sure it was working right, and put a known good stepping motor on it. Put it back on, and replaced all the belts. And it still does it.
I put the ecu in my 90 GTU, and tried to check the codes, but it did the same thing. The check engine light stayed on. The ECU was rebuilt a few times, and I think that might be part of the problem. But I dont want to get another ECU, and it turn out to be a short in the harness, and fry another ECU.
What should I do? I dont want to spend much, if anything on the engine. Im replacing it very soon, and dont want to waste money.

Just start ripping it out. You can spend more time prepping the engine bay and tranny area for your project. Like you said waisting money on it just doesn't mke sense. All of those troubles will go away.

I put the ecu from my 90 GTU in, and it ran great. No codes stored even. Time for a new ECU.
