Question 89 TurboII Help!

Hello All!

I just picked up a 89 Turbo II and am just begging on these rotary engines. Now I am not new to engines just rotary ones.

How offten should you replace the oil and what type should be used. I am having an agument with one of my friends on this one;

Synthetic Oils VS. Regular Oil

I know in regular piston engines there is a difference but with these wankels does it matter? Isn't the oil getting burned anyways?

Also the last couple of mornings it's been whiteish smoke thats coming out (and this is after a non-synthetic oil change).

Thanks!

Rick

WOW clean TII!..i like red with black interior!..
How much did you get it for???

as for oil change since you have a TII if you want it to last and runs good i would change every 2,500 miles. Now after im done with my project 87TII i will definitely change oil every 2K miles.

Also is this going to be your daily driver???..

Any mod in the future???

And how many miles in the ODO???

ENJOY YOUR NEW RX7!..you will have fun with it for sure!!!..

Cool

Hey Thanks for the reply.

I have been driving it to work and am going to drive it daily (it's about 25 miles each way). Do you know the difference between synthetic oil and regular?

I thought that 2500 was about right. And I was told by the last owner that he usually goes to Oil Change Places (like JiffyLube) and get it changed every 3000 + gets it toped off once a month.

Now I know these engines burn oil and if I drive it 50 miles a day how often should I fill it up? (I don't want to sound like a complete idiot but I just got this car and this morning I was looking for the dip stick AND couldn't find it. Do you know where generally there located for this year?)

Future Mods (currently EVERYTHING is stock but not bad because the TII especially 89-91 already have alot of upgrade):

- GReddy Power Extreme 60/80mm Cat-Back (see pic)
- Front Spoiler w/ better kit all around(see pic)
- Tokio Illumina Suspension
- Cross Drilled Rotors (see pic)
- Upgrade Clutch Package (racing)
- Twin Turbo (maybe if I can get one cheap)
- Upgraded Turbo (definately)
- Cold Air/High Flow Intake System
- Upgraded Computer System
- Fuel Injector Upgrade (probably 720cc)
- Upgraded Intercooler Kit (Greddy)
- Upgraded Blowoff Valves
- Turbo Timer

.. this is all for now that I've seen and want, what about you? ..

Congrats! That's a sweet looking clean T2! Looks just like mine in fact (though I have the cool hollowed-out FTP lens kit with mesh inside)

The oil dipstick is well hidden. Peep down into the tangle of wires and hoses just behind your A/C and P/S pumps, sorta under and to the side of the intercooler. There should be a little metal loop you can pull on, and out comes the stick. The really fun part is getting it back in! muahahahaha

good luck with your car!

I think the general consensus is that if you're still using the stock omp, which injects the oil into the chambers, then you should stay away from synthetic oils (it leaves deposits when burned). But if you disable the omp and run premix like I'm doing, then you can use all the synthetic oil you want.

The white smoke you're seeing in the mornings could be the symtom of the ever dreaded o-ring failure. If it has been ever overheated then the housings are warped allowing coolant to seep into the chambers when let sit for a while. Keep your eye on the coolant level, and if coolant is disappearing and you've checked everywhere for leaks, (hoses, heater core, rad.) then that could be your problem.

white smoke = coolant
blue smoke = oil
black/gray smoke = running rich

psycheus:

That is a really nice TII. The exhaust you want is the same one i want. I love that exhaust.

As for how often to check your oil I would say at first, since it is new to you, that I would check it pretty regular. Like maybe every other day til you get a feel for how often yours burns oil. Then after you have a pretty good idea i would just check it like evry other gas fill up or something like that. I really dont drive mine that much; and i usually change mine every 1500 or less...i am real particular about my TII. If I drove mine all the time I would probally not be able to afford oil changes that regular.

As for which oil I use, I use castrol 20w-50. Some people might use different weights or brands..but just for the sake of mentioning it that is what i use.
well good luck and later

Good advice and sweet T2!!! I would also check it often until you get a feel for how much you use driving those miles. Also like has been mentioned your white smoke could be anti freeze, Keep an eye on it.
Good luck & happy motoring!

Unhappy

Hey, just letting everybody know that the Greddy Power Extreme system mentioned here has been discontinued by Greddy. Rotary Performance may have a few left. Possibly some other dealers might still have one lying around, but I don't know who. The only other option is a used system. Good luck!

I got some news on that one.

Now dont any of you get the thousand bucks(rounded up) up and go buy mine. I talked to the guy at RP cant remember his name; but he can still order them. I called about a fuel filter and since I had him on the phone I asked abou the exhaust system. Yeah, i know it says on the internet site that they are limited and all that stuff but that is what the guy at RP told me..they can still get them.
so since i shared that info with yall i need to get mine first...oh yeah you have to have the money first..i knew there were something keeping me from getting one. oh well

what I paid for it

I only paid $7700 CDN (bout $5,000 US)

It is in imaculate condition, although a thunder storm did some nice hail damage to the hood and sunroof that I am getting repairs on in spring.

The images wouldn't work for me unless I cut and pasted the addresses.

Here is a pic of my machine...it is a horrible picture, but I should have better ones soon.

You can see the 'cataract' in the FTP lens.
