the FAQ has some good info on passing E. You might want to start there, as one option is to add a fair amount of ethanol to the fuel and retard the timing ( like i said check the FAQ, i cant remember the details, it might be advance the timing, and I cant remember the ratio, but I know its not to exceed 30%). Or, you fried your cat, and (assuming you failed) this is the reason. No pics here, I have an 88 T2, with the Air pump removed, and half the emissions removed as well. Since I no longer have a friend on the inside, I may be attempting the ethanol thing in Feb, and it scares me, you have to be SUPER careful, as ethanol burns faster, and it is very likely that you will experience knock (thinking back, it was retard the timing).

I have a GM air pump mounted by the charcoal canister and controlled by an on/off switch.
There's alot of conflicting info out there as to when the air should come on. Most say to turn the pump on to warm up the cat which is what most agree on. Some say that the air heats up the cat to improve efficiency while others say it cools the cat because too much. Too much air can over heat a destroy the internals. I haven't found any consistency on when to operate the air pump other than the extra air will help in reducing hydrocarbons. Third gens run the air pump at idle.
I called Random Technolgy yesterday to get some input and found out some interesting stuff.
It seems that most cats today are 3-way type that will have provisions for an air pump or no air pump. The air pump is old technolgy as I understand it. So I asked if I could run my Bonez high flow cat without the air pump and he said YES! Basically there is no difference between a cat with or without an air tube. If you run an air pump, then turn it on at start-up. No need to run it while driving.
Yes it may help to run the air pump during emission testing but it may effect the other emissions so he stated it might be experimental to see if on or off works better.
Bottom line, no air pump is required if you have a 3-way cat.
By the way, if you have an eletric air pump like the GM unit, mount it towards the front by the air intake cone (modification). The charcoal canister location is too hot next to the turbo.

I've read most if not all threads on emissions.
all i keep reading is run some fresh air to the cat so that the air is diluted (spell check) as it escapes through the exhaust.

The car has failed emissions with the previous owner and now its my turn to figure it out. He failed with the cat installed.
My next step is to replace the cat, dump air into it, and take it for inspection.

I have a box of brackets bolts and an air pump, but haven't figured out how it goes. The parts i have do not look like the assembly i have on my 10th AE.
86-88, 89-91 is there a difference.

Thanks
Rick

Check the FSM diagram. Do a search for FSM. There's a link to it on line. You'll be able to see the assembly/parts of the stock air pump.
