89 N/a Won't run

I just put a new engine in my 89 vert. It will start right up and I can keep it running if I keep the RPM's above about 3k RPM's. But it won't Idle. It doesn't even try to idle. It just drops right off and dies. I've checked for vacume leaks and can't see any.

Anyone have any ideas where I can start.

Mike

Engine could be low on compression (probably is). Make sure that engine does NOT get hot at all and give it a fair amount of idling time, then break it in. Power and streetability will improve over time.

The motor is a known good used motor. Compression is good. I've checked and rechecked all the connectors.

I'm thinking it has a bad vacume leak.

I also forgot to mention that it is backfireing a lot. Mostly lots of poping in the exhaust.

Am I right to think that the vacume leak would have to be pretty big to make it not idle?

Thanks for the replies so far,
Mike
