'89 engine swap to '88

Hello, I've got an '88 NA with a bad engine seal. I've been looking around at rebuild prices and I found that it could be cheaper to buy another car and pull that engine. While looking, I found an '89 NA for a good bit less than rebuilding my current engine. As a bonus, it's got some parts I could pull and put on my car.

I'm not too savvy with the differences between the two engines other than the HP.
I was just wondering if you guys know any problems I might run into if I was to try to put the S5 engine into my S4 car?

Also, slightly off the original topic, has anyone heard of a trick where you offset the firing of the trailing spark plug by about 2ms and as a result you get an extra 3 HP per rotor?

Thanks a ton!

If you use an 89 engine in an 88 car you cant use anything but the block. and you still have to change the front cover.

My swap was a S5 Turbo J Spec swap to S4 Vert ( it only added a few hours to extend the RHD wiring harness and a new throttle cable and tach issues) has nothing to do with the problems you are going to encounter between your S4 dash harness going into the S5 ECU or vise versa. Unless and this is a BIG UNLESS your going to change ALL the electrical components in your dashboard including the harness, and your entire chassis harness OR your just using the S5 block ONLY and you would still have to change the front cover (as mentioned), at this point and cost you have defeated the point of going S5. Or you can put aside AT LEAST an extra $1500.00 on wiring ALONE to make them compatible from a wiring expert. Now I do have book from my swap that contains all the basic wiring diagrams from both series and how to make them compatible with ECU pin outs etc… its really thick (bible) and I will sell it out right for $300.00 if you’re interested, but plan on many hours of trouble shooting, again that has NOTHING to do with JSPEC or TURBO. This just for S5 engine harness to S4 dash harness. Dude..im not trying to be a know it all…but I have done this and footed the bill (BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS) …sure its nice to have one of only a few to have successfully pulled it off and has a running S4-S5 swap (J-SPEC TURBO in my case) but..you can make power and accomplish your goals in other more logical less expensive ways. For me it was more of the challenge and the fact that I had already bought and imported my engine from japan. If you got some deep pockets and plan to NEVER get your money back... I say, go for it.

lol you guys and your theories
yould could put an S5 motor in,and have it all wired up to run in 1-3 hours depending on how skilled you are with wiring

all by splicing on the S5 chassis harness to ECU plug on the S4 chassis harness
and 7 other wires on the engine harness

Thered be very few Sr20 swaps if nissan guys had the same attitude as the people on here
