Has anyone installed a cd/tape/radio unit from a convertible or 89 model rx7 into an 88 or 87 TII?? If so do they plug right in? I would assume that something has to be done to compensate for the cd player.. Any infor would be great..I just bought an 87 TII for $500 and it runs. It is a restoration project. Usual stuff, Needs interior, seats, radio, and engine. Gray interior like to upgrade to leather if anyone has any seats in good shape let me know, I am in NC

Why are you messing around with stock stereo electronics?&nbsp The stock Mazda stuff is crap - most stock OEM stereos are crap.&nbsp Go with an aftermarket deck, and your ears will thank you.

i have to agree with REted on this one a stock cd player is not even worth the trouble puting back in get a dash kit and get a singal din aftermarket cd player

 

since you asked, you'll find the female plugs off the main harness are different than the male's on the head unit.

If you're determined to upgrade only with stock, you'll also have to be VERY ambitious.

You'd need to cut the female plugs from the '89 donor main harness (salvage as much wire length from the plugs as you can), download the electic diagram from an online factory manual (so you can map hot to hot, ground to ground, front left positive speaker to front left positive speaker, etc), fire up your soldering iron, grab some shrinking tubing, and have at it.

So, bottom line, be kind to your brain cells and either stay with a S4 head unit or go after market.

I will tell you that with a S4 head unit you can fabricate a plug for an aftermarket disc changer to plug directly into the head unit such that it will think it is the factory single disc in dash head unit. Better highs and lows than a RF type set up, and the whole thing acts like stock. Been there, done that, works great.

The S5 head unit design changed such that you can't do this same trick.
