88 Vert Trunk Lid Struts

I decided I was tired of the guillotine action of my trunk lid falling and threatening my fingers. So, I bought new gas struts.

The upper end of the old struts just unbolts from the trunk lid, but the bottom end is a ball and cup arrangement. But for the life of me, I can find no way to separate the cup from the ball. Is cutting the cup on half with a grinder the only wat to separate this? Trying to push it off just resulted in the ball post being bent.

Can you give me the make/model of the replacement strut you’re using? My fingers are facing the same threat.

Thanks.

Actually, it was the perfect answer and to make my image worse, I found the replacement ball studs in the bag of the strut where the manufacturer had left it for for. Stupid!
But the trunk lid is once again springing open and holding itself up.

Thanks again
