88 vert ECU in 91 vert? possible?
you can pull codes while the CEL is illuminated, its kinda preferred since you know a code is stored at that time. when you turn the car off any stored codes are erased and the cycle starts over.
by "stored" i mean this is old technology and there is nothing really stored longer than 1 ignition key cycle.

My S5 computer stored a code from a couple of years prior when I started the car and forgot to plug in the AFM after detailing my engine bay. I jumpered the test connector to set my idle and was like "what the hell, why do I have a code flashing?!" and it was code 8. Took me a minute to realize why it was there because it was from so long ago.
It will not, however store most codes.
