88 vert; Bonez Cat; failed emissions

Can anyone tell me what the life expectancy of a bonez high-flow cat is? I' ve had mine for about 4 years and have used the atf trick a few times.

I just failed my emissons test for NO.

We're assuming your air pump is connected to the cat correct?

What are the emission results, when was the last tunup, etc..

Yes it would be interesting to know what all the results of your test were and also the test protocol in Atlanta(is it an idle test or or a load test on a dyno?).
It is very unusual,in my experience, for an RX-7 to fail NO test.If it was during an idle test there maybe a simple solution, but if it was on a load test then your cat may be NFG.

They let the car idle for ~5 minuets and then sniff at 3200 rpms I believe.

Thanks for the response. I've been out of town for a few days. Ok, yes my air pump is connected correctly. As for a tune-up, I just changed the plugs but the plug wires (magnecore 10mm) are about 2 years old. are the The test in Atlanta is a 50/15 Load Test, here are the emmissions results:

HC-ppm: Reading- 164; Allowable- 180: Pass
CO-%: Reading- 0.03; Allowable- 1.01: Pass
NO-ppm: Reading-2104; Allowable- 1378: Fail
RPM: Reading- 1687; Allowable-1500-3000: Pass
CO + CO2-%: Reading- 0.1; Allowable; 6.0 min: Pass

My car by the way is running great better than ever actually. I thought I had blown an apex seal about two months ago because it started running like ****. But after about another month it just stopped running bad and started running great. Could that have been a sign of the Cat going bad?

It could be the catalyst...

Test the EGR. Check your timing. Replace the o2 sensor if more than 50k miles of use. Check all vacuum lines/hoses.
Your HC barely passed.
Get a fuel injection cleaning--preferably in car. This will also clean carbon out of the engine.
Save all your receipts. Around here, if you exceed a certain $$$ amount, they give you a 1-year amnesty and you would have to spend that $$$ amount again next year. I hope that you have that option.
I would think that the $350 catalyst would be the last and most expensive thing to be replaced.

I agree with dead, it sounds more like a mixture problem than a cat, yes you are on the end of the cats life as well.

Most aftermarket performance cats seem to only last about 5 years on a RX-7. I am sure there are exceptions, but they are rare.
